How well do bamboo diapers hold up? Friday, August 10, 2012 1:47 PM (permalink)
I'm trying to decide between unbleached and bamboo meos. I'd prefer bamboo because I just adore the fabric, but also I'm wanting diapers that will last through multiple children because I've just had my first. I think the meos bamboos have been around for at least a few years. I'd like to ask the people who have been using them for 2+ how well they're holding up? Thanks.

I don't think that they hold up quite as well.  All but one of my bamboo diapers that I purchased new are no longer functional - they don't hold enough pee.  The one that I am still using is a replacement for one that got bald spots from the first batch before ME changed the fabric.  I still have several cotton Sandys that I purchased in used condition that are in useable condition.  In my opinion if you are planning on having multiple children I would choose cotton.

Yeah, I would say the cotton definetly hold up better than the bamboo. There were slight issues with the first couple 'batches' of bamboo diapers (that ME was amazing in their replacements!) but I do think that's been solved now. The new bamboo diapers include some cotton as well to provide much better longevity than plain bamboo (without making much of a difference in terms of trimness and softness).

I have some ME bedwetter pants made from the new bamboo that were in use for about 2 years and they're still in good shape. If you look at them really really closely you'll see some spots where there's significant thinning (almost balding) but they're still plenty good enough to use.

So basically the cotton is the best for longevity (regular cotton will be better than the organic, just because it includes some polyester in the base) but that doesn't mean that bamboo is a bad choice or that it will fall apart in an unreasonable amount of time kwim...

Karen.

I have a bunch of bamboo meos that I purchased in 2009.  They were used heavily for 2.5 years.  They are definitely thinner and rougher than they were before, and not as absorbent.  I've thought about retiring them, but I keep coming back to them.  They are my favourite diaper for letting my toddler run around coverless in the backyard.  I have some cotton ones too but they have been used much less.  I haven't noticed any thinning on them.  I would agree that the cotton ones probably are more durable.  I wouldn't expect any more than 3 years of heavy use out of the bamboo ones unless you are going to add doublers (in addition to the snap in liner).
