Wizard Duo Diapers (2 sizes) & Newborn Babies

Has anyone tried using the Wizard Duo Diapers (small insert) on newborns? My first baby is due in July and I'm sold on cloth diapering right from the start. I love the look of the Wizard Duo Diapers and would like to use the 2-size system right from the hospital when the baby's born. Are they intended to be used on newborns? I just want to be sure they won't be too bulky and I've heard you have to be careful with newborn diapers because of the umbilical cord stump. Any input or suggestions?

I'm using Duos with the small insert for my newborn son (second child) right now and it's working out very well. I used disposables while in the hospital because it's just a bit easier to avoid the cord and so I didn't have to worry about laundry, but I switched to Duos once at home even before the cord fell off (you can just fasten the diaper lower down). I was itching to switch by then so that I wouldn't have to worry about poop explosions up the back anymore, which I got with disposables but which never happen to me with the Duos. In terms of fit, I don't find them too bulky, although they're definitely bulkier than disposables. I actually cheaped out and didn't buy any xsmall covers (just started out with small ones on the assumption that baby would gain quickly), so I find the cover part leaves quite a bit of room open around the skinny newborn legs (although the waist fits perfectly well)... I'm sure that with xsmall covers this wouldn't happen. Still, in spite of this, I haven't had too many leaks. Now and then if I'm holding him on his side and he points his pee stream directly at the leg opening I get all wet, but even that happens very seldom. Hope that helps!! All the best with baby #1!

I have CD'd all three of my children and religiously used the various options ME sells. The Duo system is so functional and practical for a newborn. You can have a bunch ready so that when it comes time to change, you don't need to fuss with a diaper and a cover, just one set of snaps instead of two! Great for a fussy baby and a new parent :) Like the above post mentioned, you can keep the diaper below the cord and the nylon binding is so soft, it won't agitate the baby's skin. It will seem 'bulky' on your newborn, but in reality, any cloth diaper will. It's hard to compete with a paper-thin disposable. If you could compare a NB Duo set with a One Size, you'd see that the Duo is much slimmer for a newborn. Both are very effective, but the duo is more slim/trim. With my third baby, I already had some small Sandy's. I really wanted to try the Duo's because I had heard great things about them. So, I did my own test and used Sandy's for two weeks and than Duo's for two weeks to see which one I prefer. Duo's won hands down simply for ... well simplicity! Good luck and I wish you the best of luck! -SarahF

I currently use the Duos with my 7 week old daughter. I started using them probably about 2 weeks ago. She was born small, 6lbs3oz so they didn't fit right away, so I also don't know how they are if the stump is still there. I'm using the two size system and have the small size inserts and covers. They hold poop in like it's no one's business! I love love LOVE them for that. I highly doubt I will experience a leak using these diapers. They absorb pee so no leaks there, and they hold in the poop. :) They are bulky, but I think all cloth are. They don't have the chemicals like disposables do, they rely on pure absorption power of the cloth. I found that using clothes a size above what I would normally put baby in helped the clothes fit over the Duos. Ex: Nb size fit her very well, but 0-3 month size was slightly large, so I would use 0-3 month size if I was using cloth diapers. I only bought the starter pack of Duos, so if you plan on using them full time, I'd buy more of them. I just wanted a variety of diapers so I bought Duos, MEOS, Sandy's a few Bumgenius, some Econobum prefolds and some fitted velour Rearz diapers as well. As of right now, Molly is 8lbs8oz and doesn't quite fit into the MEOS or Sandy's that great yet, so I'm only using the small Duos I've got as well as the Bumgenius and Rearz. I can't wait to use the Sandy's though, they look sooooo comfy and absorbent!

The small Duo diaper insert is sized to fit perfectly into the small Duo Cover. It contracts to fit into the XS Duo cover so it is a little big in there but the XS Duo cover fits the newborn very well. The elastic at the waist front is not only there to prevent leakage but you can place the elastic down lower so that it sits under the cord. For a perfect fit on a newborn you need to have both pieces sized for an optimum fit and we only do this for diaper services- where we provide an XS Duo diaper insert for the XS Duo diaper cover. The fit of the Sm Duo diaper insert with the XS Duo cover is very satisfactory and we have no complaints at all. For a more perfect fit the Uno is superb with an umbilical cord cut out.
