I love taking my DS out in public in his cloth diapers. In fact sometimes I make it a point just to leave his shorts off if he has a cute diaper or cover on. I love people to ask about his diapers! And I love to change him while we are out because I always get looks and a lot of moms ask about his diapers. (I have made a few CD converts that way!) I always keep a small waterproof tote in the diaper bag. It holds a couple diapers. I use a Mother of Eden tote, but other companies like Bummis makes small totes too. Some snap close, most have draw strings. If my tote is dirty I just throw in a plastic grocery sack. For wipes I keep a small travel size plastic container in my diaper bag, and before I go out I fill it with damp cloth wipes.
