I'm certainly no expert, but just wondering if you're changing the water daily? To me that might explain the smell... standing water + pee/poopy diapers +3 days= UGH!
I use a little bit of Amaze powder which is specifically formulated for soaking and pre-treating baby clothes/diapers. I fill pail about halfway with lukewarm/cool water, add the Amaze, and swish to dissolve. I quickly rinse out the "only pee" diapers in the sink beforehand, then add them to the pail. The next day I dump out the water and usually don't need more Amaze since there's enough still soaked into the diapers.
I tend to spray clean the poopy ones first before putting in pail (breastfed= messy poops). If I use a disposable liner --which I usually do-- it's much easier. If I happen to forget a liner or they're just really bad I use the shower sprayer to give them a good shot into the toilet so it's pretty much completely gone.
This sounds involved, but it literally takes all of 3-5 minutes and then they just soak in the pail. For anyone squeamish, the worst thing my hands ever touch is the damp pee diapers when I rinse them out, and the pre-rinsed poop ones when I transfer them to the pail. It's not gross at all, and there is no smell whatsoever from the diapers or the pail!
Hope this will help!
