I love my front loading washer. I too found it messy with the wet pail, so I switched to a dry pail system after only a month or so.
First I use the pre-wash cycle on cold, no detergent, then I use the regular cycle, heavy setting w/extra rinse turned on. Hot water for this one. I add my regular detergent, about 1/3 the normal amount, with 2-3 drops of Melaleuca oil (tea tree oil) in with the detergent, and one drop in the liquid bleach compartment. I will only do a light wash on Hot after this w/no detergent, only if I put a little too much detergent in and the waste water still seems a sudsy, or the window on the washer still has a slight ring of suds.
As for oder, I use a Diaper Champ pail, and only encounter odors when I open the container to load my machine.
I hope this helps, and good luck.
