Sheila,

Just out of curiosity, what kind of diapers were you using with your first child? Did you do anything else differently (different detergent perhaps?) with those diapers?

Not that I'm trying to discount your experience, I'm just really curious about this soaking shortening the life of diapers. I've heard this a few times before but have never really been told why this would happen. Anyone have any ideas? Surely it's not just the water alone breaking down the fibers? Water and amonia from the urine maybe???

Just curious cause my diapers were just fine after a year and a half of constant use and soaking in a wet pail (only plain water in the pail though, never anything else, not even baking soda). I do admit that I stopped using them after that time because I really got into cutesy wahm diapers (I still loved them, but you only need so many diapers....). But they were *exactly* like new at that point (well except for that super fluffiness and lintyness that only lasts a few weeks anyway...) so I can't see where they'd be significantly worse now (6 months or so later).

Karen.

PS, and just as an fyi, I got tired of the cutesy diapers.... they worked ok but no better than my ME and they were sooo expensive. So now I've ordered a bunch of Toddle-Ease for my 'I-want-nothing-to-do-
with-the-potty' son and am getting ready to sell off my wahm diapers. I estimate that I'll get enough money from selling them (about 24 of them, maybe less) to easily cover my ME purchase (which included 24 Toddle-Ease, 4 XL AIOs and 3 bedwetter pants!!!) and likely have a lot leftover! That's how much these things cost me! Not worth it imo, and I wouldn't do it again with another child. Cute covers for summertime, maybe... but not diapers.
