Same detergent (Tide and occasional Costco brand). Different washing machine. The diapers back then were a mix of Mother Ease and Indisposables but saw the same result. The Indisposables would get actual big holes in them where as the mother ease got more like bald patches. With Ds #1 I used one size diapers.
What I have been told is that the water breaks down the cotton fibers.
I also had a problem with bad odors and having to wash over and over and over.... But it is just like anything, water does add to the breaking down process.
