Hi Samantha,
I am here in Sunny Vancouver and also used to have that problem. I thought maybe it was because of the constant wet weather and cold and they just weren't getting a break....but it turns out to be the pail itself. (KarenC helped me discover that - man I LOVE this board)
What I did was get a bummi pail liner (from born to love) and I keep that in the pail WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I use a dry pail. (before I started with the liner I put bleach and water in the pail and let it sit in the sun for a couple of hours to get rid of the stench in the plastic)
I wash every 4 (sometimes 5 days) if I'm being lazy.
I dump them in the machine on a rinse with 3 drops of teatree oil. Then I do a hot wash with a little of an enzymatic President's choice powder and baking soda. Then I fill a downy ball with 10 drops of teatree and hot water which opens in the rinse cycle. And I do a second cold rinse.
I put 2 drops of teatree in the pail with the bummi bag/liner in it and I rinse that out with hot water. I take the liner out and do a wash with that (and the bummi bag that I carry in my diaper bag for outings). I rinse the pail out and let it sit in the sun.
The reason why it was stinking so much was because the urine was getting into the plastic.
I hope that helps. :-)
I have had nothing but a positive experience with ME Diapers and wouldn't change a bit of it for the world.
