Hi I think that other people become defensive about things like cloth diapering because they are uneducated about how good the benefits are. I have heard things that sound so wrong, but I think its because they dont know. After all, they used to not have disposables at all. I like the women at this group and I also like the group at www.mothering.com just click on discuss, then scroll down to diapering.
: Although I am finding cloth diapering to be a wonderful experience, I am NOT enjoying the comments and ignorance that is going along with it. People seem to think it's unsanitary. People who have kids and are not using cloth diapers tend to get very defensive, even though my husband and I are NEVER militant about our environmental convictions. We also never bring it up until someone notices our daughter's big cloth bum or asks what brand of disposables we use. We usually say something like, "We're just trying it out, it has environmental and economic benefits" or something like that, but people seem to be annoyed with us, even though we are trying so hard not to be on a soapbox. Why is cloth diapering so UNACCEPTABLE when it really should be AS ACCEPTABLE if not more-so than disposables? My pediatrician seems to think it's just fine. I've been over the research tons of times and I know it's a good, if not the best option.... why are people so obnoxious and what can I do about it? Also, since I am by today's standards a younger mom (28) people seem to give me that "I'm older/wiser" crap and make comments like "you won't last through 6 months with that" when I've already done 2 months without even noticing it. I can't even remember how to put a disposable on correctly!!!!! Somebody please give me some encouragement or point me to a cloth diaper mom's group (North Shore Massachusetts).
