Nope, you're not doing anything wrong. It's perfectly normal for unbleached diapers to get lighter and lighter with age. It's just the normal result of washing in detergent, probably very similar to what happens to dark clothing with time.
It's also normal for the diapers to feel less soft with age. With new diapers the fabric is very fluffy and soft feeling because there are lots of loose fibers in the fabric. With time those get washed away and the fabric gets thinner and thinner (though the thinning is much more gradual than that initial loss of loose fibers, that's why there's so much lint in the beginning). Just normal aging. You'll see that after just a month or so that your new diapers look and feel much more similar to your old ones.
