Do you mean an alternative to Mother-Ease covers or just diaper covers in general? As far as I know there really aren't any alternatives to some kind of waterproof diaper cover.

ME covers aren't the cheapest out there so there are alternatives. The Bummis covers are a little cheaper and work ok but I don't find them as good as the ME. Lots of people really do like them though and they're a fairly good cover. There are tons of other covers out there, the cheapest probably being the rubber pants you can buy at places like Wal-Mart and such. But most people consider those a waste of money because they're uncomfortable, don't breathe, leak and don't last.

Don't forget that you really only 'need' maybe 3 covers. It's certainly more convenient to have more but if you wash by hand every time a cover gets dirty then 3 should be enough, especially ME covers as they only need to be washed when they get soiled or after an overnight diaper. ME covers literally last for years if properly cared for (hang to dry and especially no bleach!) so you can use them till your child outgrows them and then pass them on to another child or sell them to someone else. Two of my ME Airflows have been in almost constant use for almost 4 years now!! At something like $11 each, I feel they were a very good investment! Mother-Ease covers may cost a couple of dollars more than some other brands, but they're definetly worth it in my experience. I have tried TONS of other covers and not a single one measure up as far as I'm concerned.

Some people do make their own covers. Either using PUL (poly-urethane laminate) but that's rather hard to find. Many people use fleece or wool to make their own covers (you can buy those as well but they're actually more expensive than ME covers). But it's a lot of work and good results aren't easy to come by (depends a lot on the fabric you use as well as your skill as a seamstress).

Karen.
