Switching to a wet pail won't really change what you should be doing with the diaper anyway so unless you have other reasons for disliking a dry pail I wouldn't bother switching. You're still going to have to get rid of as much of the poop as possible and a wet pail won't change that.
The sprayer thing may not be completly out of the question just because you're renting. I don't actually have one but from what I've seen the adjustments to the plumbing are very minor and can be undone easily and without damaging anything. You're only attaching stuff to the pipes at the back of the toilet, no going into walls or anything like that.
If that's still out of the question I would say some kind of liner is your best option. Flushable ones are the easiest because you just flush them away when they're pooped on. But some people also use non-flushable and/or non-disposable (ie fleece) with success. Only problem with those is that you still have to dunk the liner before throwing it away or putting it in the pail. The theory though (have no idea if it's reality) is that a liner is much easier to dunk than a whole diaper is).
I've heard of some people also using plastic spoons to scrape the poop off the diaper and there's also a fairly cheap device called a diaper duck that's supposed to make dunking less yucky by making it such that your fingers never have to touch the diaper while dunking. You could also use gloves to help keep the ick factor down...
