I have not heard of any negative effects from Zinc Oxide and have used it myself from time to time. The diaper rash cream that is awful for cloth diapers is usually Desitin or any cream that has fish (cod) oil in it. The fish oil is very difficult to remove and causes the diapers to retain a fishy odor.
That said, I would recomend a little caution with oitments that are very thick and waterproof. These types of creams are, by their very nature, not water soluble and could build-up in your diapers. Under normal, occasional use it wouldn't be a problem but if you use some at every diaper change that's a different story. I wouldn't think you'd cause any permanent damage but it could cause odor and/or stain problems.
I would recomend you use fleece liners in your diapers. They work by wicking moisture to the diaper and drying almost instantly so they keep baby's skin dry. Most people use them in nighttime diapers to protect their baby's skin against the prolonged contact with a wet diaper. But it's useful for every diaper for baby's with super-sensitive skin. Try going bare, if that doesn't work try using the liners and if that doesn't work try the oitment (most expensive last!).
