This happens to my Sandies when I don't put them in the drier, and I've only had them for a few months. What I do is grap the parts that feel lumpy with both hands and give them a vigorous wiggle back and forth (does that make sense?). This loosens it right up.
It seems like the material clumps up in the corners where the soaker is sewn in, and since they are not being bashed around in the drier, it doesn't unclump. The wiggling unclumps them.
