Yes, that is true, I've read the same thing. The risk with today's tampons is less great than before because of that. That ingredient made tampons sooooo absorbant that the level of disruption (fluids and ph) it caused was considered too great a risk for TSS and other things as well (I believe that long term internal exposure was believed to be a cancer risk as well). Kinda scary to think that's in diapers isn't it??!!

But the risk of TSS is still present (tampon packs today still carry that same warning) as tampons still disrupt the natural balance because they still absorb (though less than before). How great the risk is, I have no idea.... Obviously it's low enough that health authorities don't have a problem with it. I just know that it's apparently not an issue with The Keeper because it's not absorbant.
