It can be a little messy when you're first getting used to it (getting used to removing it and emptying it properly etc...). But it's not very messy and especially since you only end up having to do it a couple of times a day it's really not a big deal. One of my biggest fear was what I would do with it while out of the house (public restrooms etc..). I read about using toilet paper to rinse it out, bringing a squirt bottle with you etc.... I've never had to deal with that because I only empty it once in the morning and once at night.
Basically, yes it can be a little messy, but to me that's just having your period. The product itself isn't particularly messy. I've found it to be about equivalent or even less messy than using pads and tampons. I feel much 'cleaner' using it than I ever did using pads and even tampons.
It's a very personal thing. You do have to have a certain level of comfort with your body. Mind you, after having a baby, I'm sure we're all much more comfortable with our bodies! LOL!
