Don't know..... maybe that's a minimum? Or maybe that's what is needed to remove manufacturing chemicals that may irritate a baby's skin? I only know that this is what I've read in many places, what I've experienced and what many others have experienced. It might work after two washes (no harm in trying) but there is a definite risk that you'll have leakage or at best, poor absorbancy. Just a heads up...
