Oh, forgot to explain how the stay-dry liners work (commercial or home-made they all work on the same principal). They're made from a non-absorbing material (usually polyester) that dries almost instantly. It doesn't absorb anything at all (that's why it stays dry) and lets moisture pass through to the diaper below. Very effective!
