Mary I think the M/L will be fine, my DD is about 22 lbs and has been wearing them since 20, she is really slowing down on the growth now in weight so she's been wearing them for quite some time and we have plenty of room... but perhaps someone who has a L and M/L could tell you if there is a huge differnce in size... maybe a L would do well and you wont need to buy more later.
