Hi Vi,
I have also heard those complaints before and all I can say is that I've never experienced any of them. My experience has been extremely positive (though I don't adore the One-Size, I much prefer the Sandy's). I have never had the Airflow leave a single mark on either of my children (they're both about average, my daughter was a little on the chubby side as a baby) and they've literally never once leaked!!! I adore the Sandy's diaper and have found it to be very absorbant (it even holds it's own compared to some hemp diapers I had). The diapers do get rough if line dried but then it's been my experience that all cloth diapers get rough and/or stiff when totally line dried. Flannel diapers get very stiff and terry cloth diapers get rough. Never had that problem when I dry in the dryer (even after over 2 years of constant use), and I usually only dry them there about 3/4 of the way and then line dry the rest.
About the only complaint that I've experienced is the fact that they are difficult to find covers (other than the Airflow or Rikki of course) that fit over them. They are wider on the hips that some diapers so not all covers fit over them. Of course, I've never really felt the need to get another type of cover as I've found the Airflow amazing. I did like to get cute covers for summertime and wool for nighttime and did find others that fit. The Bummis is ok for dayttime wear, a little tiny bit of the diaper sometimes shows at the hips (depending on the size of the cover) but then my diapers never get wet on the hips during the day so it wasn't a problem. I also loved the Sugar-Peas covers with ME diapers, they fit wonderfully (Other than the Airflow, SP were my favorite type of cover, a little pricey but worth it).
Basically the only way you'll know for sure what works for you and your baby is to try it. Some people swear by types of diapers I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole! Others hate diapers or covers that I absolutly adore! It's a very individual thing that depends on many factors. Try the sample packs, they're very inexpensive and a great way to try one of each. The website only has the One-Size sampler available but you can get the Sandy's one by calling the 1-800 number. If you find that they're not for you once you've tried them you can easily sell them for up to 95% of what you paid for them (depending on the condition of course) either here or on eBay.
One thing I will say is that despite the fact that obviously not every single cloth diaperer agrees on which diaper is 'the best', ME is by far one of the most popular and loved names around and I think there's some very good reasons for that.
Good luck!
Karen.
