Nope, definetly not. Any fabric softener will coat the diapers and eventually render them completly non-absorbant. I've heard that some people can get away with using just a little bit at at time but I wouldn't chance it.
If you really really want to use fabric softener there is apparently a new kind of Downy (Advanced maybe??? I forget the name) that's supposed to not coat fabrics and cause this problem. A couple members of the board have apparently used it with success. Be sure you're using the right king though...
