It definetly does depend on the baby's size and shape, no doubt about it. Your experience just proves how much it can vary as I've known people who's average sized babies have outgrown them within a couple weeks. My own son was in size *large* Sandy's when he was about 9 months old!! And though he is tall for his age, he isn't at all chubby (about average).
A good point.... Because of things like this it's probably a good idea to wait until the baby is born before buying a ton of any kind/size of diaper....
