Well... figure that a newborn will go through about 10-12 diapers a day and a toddler will go through about 5-7 a day. Then figure how often you want to wash. Don't forget to leave at least 2-3 diapers per child to use while the other ones are washing/drying, even more than that if you plan to line dry.
Keep in mind how old your older child is as well... If he/she is right near potty training age (say over 2-2.5) and is starting to show signs of readiness then it might be worth it to get fewer diapers and wash more often in the beginning. Of course, it's hard to predict when a child will be ready and how long it will take but just something to keep in mind...
