How do you convince your family/friends to try cloth diapers?
Amanda L. I am 17 weeks pregnant and have my arsenal of a variety of cloth diapers ready and waiting, I have told everyone that I am doing it and when they give me flack about it I respond with points that blow theirs out of the water and then end the conversations with just wait til you see my cute diapers if nothing else does it, the sheer cuteness will win you over!
Mandy P.H. some people are just stubborn like that. They don't want to hear anything other than the fact that their sposies are the best. I always say "you'll never find me running to the grocery store 5 minutes before closing just to buy a bag of dipes"
Johanna H.W. I try to live by example. Our neighbors don't mind seeing dipes dry in the backyard. We chose our daycare because they accepted our use of cloth diapers [especially when I showed them how MEOS are different than flats or prefolds]. I hope that some of the teachers consider it when they have kids. I love to explain to f...riends & neighbors why we take out one bag of trash every 2 weeks [since we don't use disposables daily]. Plus our house doesn't smell like poop because the solid waste goes into the toilet. We don't even use a special [expensive] diaper pail... a $12 flip top pail does the trick! I even stopped using our PUL pail liner [since I swish out the pail weekly anyway, even when I used the liner-I don't have to wash the liner anymore, which always gummed up the works in our FrontLoader]. I lent our infant diapers and smaller covers to my sister's family. I will be making cloth diapers for our 2yo's doll now that he's learning to care for his "baby".
Julia G. There is nothing cuter than a washing line full of clean diapers on a sunny day! Our neighbours have actually commented on how adorable it is:-)
Kelli W.M. I post pictures of Tucker in cloth diapers on facebook and the ten months of his life, I have had at least seven friends on facebook inquire about cloth diapering. At least four are doing it now!!! I try to be informative but not pushy. Recently, one of my friends who is expecting her first baby in September who has ex...pressed interest in cloth received a baby shower gift from me and my sister including XS Sandy's and a wetbag!
Marney K. I think that if people were given a chance top try out a cloth diaper for a month or two they would really be able to see just how easy it is. Giving them a money back guarentee would make it more palietable, and the ant returned slightly use...d diapers could be sold as is at a discounted rate. I have seen this elsewhere. Plus if they had the chance to actually speak to a person who is or has successfully used cloth diapers they would be able to get all the info. Talking to a person who used them was what finally sold me on motherease! Plus a real run down of the cost savings is a great help
Angie G. I encourage friends, family and strangers alike - I run the Des Moines Teeny Greenies branch - a free cloth diaper lending service (http://www.dsmteenygreenies.info/home.html) - what got me started on cloth to begin with was seeing my stepson in Mother Ease (I later inherited his stash for my youngest) every time I len...d diapers out I try to make certain a MEOS is included.
Sarah B. I encourage freinds and family by posting on their facebooks that diapers can take up to 500 years to decompose in a landfill and if they truly care about their babies and the air they breathe then they need to make a difference now so the future generations have a clean planet to live and grow on. I give them budget s...heets and have them fill in their costs with disposables versus cloth so they can see first hand the savings and I also tell them to visit mother-ease cloth diapers here on facebook to learn more and read first hand testimonials and comments of parents who ENJOY cd'ing so in time maybe just maybe it will spark their interest. :)
Libby D.D. I had to think about this for a while. I do the obvious lending diapers to expectant friends. Forwarding deals to friends. Have my dd wear them out in public etc. But I finally thought of my biggest way. I have 3 dds who are very excited to cloth diaper their babies. They help me wash and stuff and pick out new dia...pers and my oldest 11 yrs can fold a prefold with the best of them. Even my ds has said he hopes his wife chooses cloth. It is my own own version of start locally think globally :)
Rachel S.B. I always carry a variety of diapers with me when on outings and whenever I bust out with my prefolds or fitteds, they tell me how hard and obnoxious it looks. Then I pull out an all in one and they immediately shut up. haha It's really no different than disposables. Plus all of my family has to buy prescription dia...per cream for their baby's bum and continue having to switch brands. I like to flaunt the fact I don't.
Annmarie M.B. My husband is a scuba diver and we tell our friends that in years to come the land fill sites will be so full of nappies that they will end up tipping them into the sea and my husband don't fancy scuba diving through babies used nappies (be a new fish breed)!!
Angela W. I always wanted to use cloth diapers, but was discouraged by some friends and family, then one of my little ones kept getting a horrible rash so I switched to cloth, the rash dissaperard within days. Now I tell everyone I know how wonderful the change was, and that Mother ease is the brand to stick to, no BLOW outs an...d they are so easy to care for, and all of your children will be able to use them they outlast everything out there! I have converted 4 of my friends who recently had babies by explaining its the best thing for your baby, its a huge money saver, and its good for the environment. What more could you ask for? I find people are stumped and can't argue about the huge benifits of cloth diapers.
Jennifer N.H. I hide all the disposable diapers so that family has to use the cloth diapers....we only use the disposables for travel or an emergency...or while the laundry is being done. Showing family how easy they are is fun. They are not like "the Olden Days" with safety pins and a whole lot of folding. I was told that your diap...ers are MUCH easier to use!! Better absorbency than the disposables too :):):)
Leanne S. My high school students have to do a presentation where they talk to the class about something they've investigated. I do several demo presentations (so they can grade me using the rubric-- I do a good one, an okay one, a lousy one, etc). And I always bring in my cutest, easiest CDs to show off for one of the demos. ... I get to talk about my research of cloth dipes, the environmental savings (which teens are REALLY into) as well as how they are healthier for babies and save money. I figure I'm planting a seed, because cloth is SO alien to people-- I remember thinking it would be so hard!--so just showing them modern CDs and how cute they are makes it that much easier for them, down the line, or to encourage their families if they have baby siblings. For another demo I've also shown off my awesome carriers! The boys like the cool SSCs, and most of the girls love all the baby stuff :)
Leanne S. Oh, and talking to current parents, noting that DD was out of dipes shortly after 2yo helps a LOT! I give cloth the credit!
Goms S. I have gifted several friends, who showed even a remote interest in CDing, with the One-Size Stay-Dry Starter Package. I also tell them how we have used the same diapers on our son from Week 1 till now (he is 2 yrs old now). Further I tell them how CDing helped potty train (atleast the big job side of it) our LO at 12 ...months! I haven't changed a poopy diaper in over a year! Thank you Mother-Ease!
Karyn A.G. In July I wrote a cloth diapering article for my local mothers' club newsletter encouraging people to try cloth diapers. I included information about different types of diapers (including Motherease OS fitteds), laundering routines and benefits to the environment. The newsletter circulates amongst 275 members and I i...nvited folks to give me a call if they had any further questions. I have had 2 people inquire so far...
Tessie S. I printed off facts about the cost of sposies compared to cloth and what it does to the environment, with my number on it for anyone who is interested in learning more. i got permission to post them in the laundry rooms where i live and i also posted some in a few laundromats. I also dress lo in clothes that show off h...er cute diapers, and take the time to explain how the dipes im using work to curious ladies in public rest rooms. i made small cards and leave them on chanving stations in public restrooms as well, and once a week i wash diapers at one of the many laundromats. and i will soon be starting diaper parties as well!
Mekayla R. Ive made it my mission in life to advocate for cloth diapering. MANY parents think of the old days when you used pins and so forth, and I love showing them my babies cute diapers and how easy they are to put on . I make sure I inform people on washing techniques, detergents, bum creams, and wet bags and sprayers that a...ll help to make cloth diapering even that much easier. I have a girfriend with twin boys who is now trying cloth (who a year ago thought I was crazy, lol) as well as my best friend who started an amazing stash for her expected one in Sept becasuee of my passion for cloth. I feel so good every time I talk about it with other moms and convert them from nasty disposables! I let them know how easy it is, and also of any complications they may run into (ammonia, etc) so they don't get discouraged along the way and always make myself available to help out. I love saving money, the planet, and my cute babies bums from all those chemicals :)
Kimberly L. I give a MEOS and a Cover as a baby shower gift, Im also a volunteer for a breastfeeding support group and I hand out an information flyer that shows the pros and cons of Cloth vs Disposables. I can not say for sure how many are now using cloth but many have showed an interest and have asked me where to get them and ho...w to clean and take care of them. I believe as long as all of us Cloth diapering mommy's keep on spreading the word more and more with make the switch.... Ya for us......
Sophie C.W. I posted on Craigslist during the garbage strike in 2009 and invited them to ask me how. It generated over 50 inquiries and I'm still in contact with 5 of those women:
"Toronto is on day 17 of garbage strike and my neighbor has hauled away his 3rd large garbage bag of disposables and wipes. I've been watching/reading th...e news about how people have been so frantic about where to put their trash and my household is getting the last laugh. My DH told that neighbour how EASY it was to fold diapers, and even easier to wash them (true he hauls 'em off so I don't have to smell them!). Anyways, my point of this is it pays off to be environmently and health conscience."
Lori S.A. I gave both my sister and sister in law cloth diapers, covers, wet bags, and most importantly a gift certificate that I would wash their diapers for them if they dropped them off on the days I was already doing our own diapers. Being their own personal diaper service usually helps them overcome the fear of dirty diapers.
Jill A.S. I always mention cloth to anyone who tells me they are pregnant, I flash my kid's diaper in public-on purpose- (she wears dresses when going out for this reason), I blog about it, I share on facebook and twitter about giveaways and such, and randomly comment about it on people's posts. When someone mentioned the pamper...s 'thing' a few months ago, I ended up converting one person on the spot, she went to the store the next day and is HAPPY with her sensitive baby in cloth, another one asked about them. I do my best to point out the good AND the bad, and have helped several people 'get' into cloth that might not otherwise. Makes my day!
Asia K. I tell people to sit down and relax and imagine this huuuge, beautiful Fujiyama mountain. Then - as shock therapy - I tell them to imagine the same mountain made of the 2,5 tons of plastic diapers they would make within about two years!! it works without any further comment!! :)
Ceri H. Every time I have friends over, whether its for a play date or an extended trip, I put their babies in cloth diapers. I say I'm just doing it to save them money on the cost of how ever many disposables they would have used while their baby was at my house AND so I can take pictures of fluffy butted cuteness. Then I tak...e those pictures and send them to them :)
... 14 cloth converts and counting :D
Emily J. I am one of them! She is awesome! :)
Ceri H. You know I wasn't manipulating you, right, Ema? I really was just trying to save you money... and then, I saved you A LOT! :) ♥♥♥
Emily J. Hahah of coarse I know that! More than you even know! Honestly if we weren't using cloth right now I don't know what we would do. It has saved us on a number of occasions. Thank you Ceri for gently, honestly and lovingly encouraging me to cloth diaper my babies again. It has not only saved me money but made me a happier more earth concious person. :) :) :)
Heather D. Well this isn't specifically outreach, but just about anyone who has seen my boys in cloth diapers always asks why I chose cloth because of how much "work" it is. I always respond positively by sharing how easy cloth diapers are to use and how most of the time it's actually less work since I only have to wash poop out... of diapers and not their clothes. I always show people how cute the diapers are (esp. the new coloured diapers and lovely prints on the covers) and how comfortable my kids are in cloth. It usually ends up with someone giving cloth a try!
Dorian M. My methods to encourage others aren't innovative at all, but should hopefully appeal to the concerns any new mom would have. When you cloth diaper, you're avoiding all those chemicals that babies are exposed to with disposable diapers. Also, as a practical matter, I get far fewer blowouts and leaks with cloth diapers.... Tell that to a mom that has had to take apart her carseat yet again to clean up a messy poop episode and she just may give them a try!
Julia G. I always offer to let other people borrow a few for a week or two, so they can see for themselves easy they are to use and that no, they don't leak! While we prefer Sandy's, we have a couple of one size too, so we tend to lend both so friends can be sure of their choice. Be the change you want to see in the world:-)
Alexis C.P. I encourage my friends by offering to give them my old diapers, and always writing a full primer on how to launder, strip, what to expect in terms of laundry, how to fold, and so on. I've been successful a few times, if only for a little while!
Cassie L. I encourage my friends that stop by to see how quickly and easily I can change a cloth diaper as well as tell them how easy it is to keep up with washing. I love to sew my own cloth diapers and I try to offer to them this-they can buy some flannel sheets (from a thrift store) and some elastic etc and if they help me c...ut them, i'll gladly sew them up for free. I have a few friends that have taken me up on this offer (I think initial cost is a big scare to a lot of moms/dads about cloth diapering) and i'm really glad-glad for their pocket books, glad for their babies bums and glad for our planet!!! I also give a diaper and cover at each shower I go to with a note that they are welcome to my offer above (helping me and i'll sew them up for free) :)
Jenny C. I always use the cloth, never disposables, and when I go out am proud to try it out. I tell others how easy it is. I will be taking cloth into the hospital when I have my 10th baby, I think if people see them for real and in use, they can see how easy, stylish, affordable, and that they work!
Becky T. I give new moms a cute cloth diaper and cute diaper cover, with a note that says even if they don't want to cloth diaper full time, they're awfully cute in pictures! I think the biggest hurdle to trying cloth is the DECISION, and if you already have one on hand, all the better :)
Amy-Elissa Y. shame im in the uk but i show um off to everyone an spend so much time talking about them im now selling them via my web store being a nappy agent an nappy showers! my form of a new baby shower for cloth wanting mums to be!
Annmarie M.B. My husband is a scuba diver and we tell our friends that in years to come the land fill sites will be so full of nappies that they will end up tipping them into the sea and my husband don't fancy scuba diving through babies used nappies (be a new fish breed)!!
Lori S.A. I gave both my sister and sister in law cloth diapers, covers, wet bags, and most importantly a gift certificate that I would wash their diapers for them if they dropped them off on the days I was already doing our own diapers. Being their own personal diaper service usually helps them overcome the fear of dirty diapers.
Rianne De V. Lori I love that one, maybe I should do that with my best friend who is now pregnant. She was going to do the diaperservice, but now her mom already bought tons of disposables. I told her to just return those, and use cloth instead. I go wi...th cloth everywhere, and just show people how easy it is. It probably helps that I have a baby who only poops every 4 days or so, so don't have too many stinky diapers. See More
Ceri H. Every time I have friends over, whether its for a play date or an extended trip, I put their babies in cloth diapers. I say I'm just doing it to save them money on the cost of how ever many disposables they would have used while their baby... was at my house AND so I can take pictures of fluffy butted cuteness. Then I take those pictures and send them to them :)
Alison McC. Haertjens I share lots of pictures of my baby in her cute cloth diapers! When other moms realize that it's not just prefolds and rubber pants, they are more interested!
Gizelle P. I am a new mom interested in your product but it's so overwhelming that I can't make up my mind which one to buy. Not only that they are pretty expensive is there any one on one tips on which ones to buy and discounts out there?
Emma S. My friend and I had a "natural parenting" week at our breastfeeding group and showed off all our different types of cloth nappies. We converted about 6 people in less than an hour! :-D
Trish T. I love telling friends who use disposables that I've never had a blow-out with my mother-ease diapers. I tell them I'd much rather wash some diapers than work on getting poop stains out of my baby's clothing!
Diane M. Never had a single blow out with our exclusively breastfed baby.. Now that is a great reason to use Mother-ease Cloth Diapers..
Cole C. no blow outs from newborns with EBF poop and when people complain about the initial investment i always ask them what they think they could sell they're used Pampers for...that usually gets them at least to look into it :)
Heidi V.W.-K. I bring them to work and show my pregnant colleagues how great they look, and how easy they are to use!
Emily G.O. I take them everywhere, and when people see how easy they are to use they are interested. No blow-outs is a huge plus (my main reason for using them the first 6-8 months for sure). Also - resale value! Mother-ease has a following and a buy & sell forum right on their website. Already cloth is considerably less $ than disposable, then when you look at getting 30%-50% of your money back it is a no brainer!
Liz P. I share my love of cloth diapers with everyone. We went camping and used disposables for a few days-what a PAIN! Blowouts and the yucky trash we generated...I have converted several of my parent friends. I wish there was a "home party" compa...ny that let new parents and anyone interested in natural baby/home products try them out.I would start one if I was more motivated
Emma S. We were out for the day a few weeks ago and were using disposables. I couldn't get it on straight and said "disposables are crap" to myself, but then the baby said "crap crap crap" and kept saying it for the next 10 minutes! Bless her!
Amanda M. I let my friends borrow from my stash to see how they like them. I have a friend who is converting from Happy Heiney's one size pocket diapers to Mother-ease!! Her HH's were wicking at the seams on her heavy wetter, but NO LEAKS with ME!
Marney K. I think that if people were given a chance top try out cloth diaper for a month or two they would really be able to see just how easy it is.
