Liquid versus Powder Tide Tuesday, February 05, 2013 9:13 PM (permalink)
Hello,

I've read here and elsewhere that liquid detergents do not work well with cloth diapers.  Have you all found this to be true?  Do many of you use liquid?  I don't mind buying powder if needed (but have not looked for it in YEARS!).

I plan to use the Free and Gentle Tide.  We have a front load washer, nothing too fancy but it has a prewash and extra rinse cycle and is maybe 6 years old.  I plan to wash diapers every 2nd day and will most likley use a combination of dry and wet diaper pail (rinse poopy diapers then put in wet pail but diapers that were only pee'd in will go in dry pail).  Thats the plan, we'll see how lazy I get!!

Any advise on the powder versus liquid detergent will be much appreciated!!
Summer

I don't think there's a really huge difference honestly. I've also heard that powder is best (something to do with fewer problematic ingredients) but then again I've also heard the opposite. I'm pretty sure Erika (from Mother-ease) has said that liquid is best and considering her level of experience and the fact that they researched/tested their detergent extremely well I'd say it's worth noting. You could look up past threads for her input, it wasn't that that long ago I think. I can't seem to recall if it was only because liquid obviously dissolves better (in which case you could theoretically overcome that just by pre-diluting the powder if you were really concerned) or if there was an actual ingredient issue.

But honestly I don't think it's worth worrying about. I know ME recommends Tide in their washing instructions but they don't specify powder or liquid so I don't think it's a really big big deal.

HTH,
Karen.

PS - if you want more input you might head over to ME's Facebook page, most of the discussions seem to be going on over there nowadays...

I live in an area with hard water.  I used liquid Tide and had stink issues.  I tried numerous other detergents and still had stink issues.  I wasn't until I switched to powdered Tide that I had success with keeping happy diapers.  That said, I would try liquid and then if you have problems consider switching.  Also, remember to use the full amount of recommended detergent, not as little as other sites suggest.
