Question about swim diapers and BF babies! (purplemaryjane)

We are happy cloth users, and I have just enrolled me and LO in a swim class, to start when she's 3 months.  The obvious choice is a ME swim diaper, but I'm concerned - if they're not absorbant and they let liquids out, how do they prevent BF poo (liquid liquid liquid!) from escaping and causing a "fouling"?  I'd be mortified if my child in reusables did this (she poops frequently in the day, and unpredictably) when they are recommending Little Swimmers.

Advice/experience with either kind?  I need to be really confident in this product before I go testing them in a public pool!

Thanks!

It will probably keep the poo in well enough. I don't have any personal experience though so I can't say for sure.

But really there's nothing that a disposable swim diaper can do that's any different. They can't absorb anything either, nothing can once it's saturated (which naturally will happen instantly once put in a pool). The key is that they have good elastic at the legs and waist to keep solids (or semi-solids) contained.

They probably recomend Little Swimmers because most parents use regular disposables (not cloth) and most don't even know that reusable swim diapers exist (or that disposable ones simply can't perform any better). What they really want to prevent is two fold. First they don't want regular disposables in the pool because they can burst and send that fluff and gel into the pool (apparently they can wreck havock with the pumps, not to mention being quite the mess to clean up). Then they want to preven solids from 'floating' around the pool, probably more for esthetics than anything else. They can't do anything about the bacteria from feces or urine so that's why they load up the pool with chlorine...

you are probably likely to get better "containment" with a cloth swim diaper.  I have often had the same thought myself these past couple months sitting around the pool with DS.  My take is the "responsible parent" approach - I figure if he does poop (and he hasn't) it is my responsibility to notice and get him out of the water ASAP before the liquid poop can leech out too much.  Also, by 3 months, your daughter is likely to be on a more regular poop schedule (although there is no guarantee) and her BF poops might even firm up a little.  That said, my guy pooped about 4-6 times a day minimum until he was about 8 months old.  BUT, he never pooped in the bath or the pool - neither did son #1 - so I have this theory (at least as far as my kids go) that they somehow instictively know not to poop in the water (or I have just been insanely lucky!).

i have a mother-ease swim diaper and i really like it. the only thing was when i first got it i was a little confused. it is made from a similar material to a swim suit you would buy for yourself, then inside is sewn a layer to catch the poos. i'm sure someone already said this (sorry i didn't read the other replies too carefully) but swim diapers are ONLY meant to hold poos, not pees... anyways i think the ME would do pretty good holding a BF poo... it has always held lilly's poos (but she 2 so they are much different poos now). anyways i think i would give any swim diaper a try in either a home wading pool or the tub if i was very nervous about it. www.diaperpin.com has *some* reviews of cloth swimmers.

Hello.  I'm sorry I'm late getting back to you but I've used the ME swim diap. with my DD as a newborn and she did a bf poop and none leaked out.  The netting is very fine and the elastics are good so it held it all in.  Have fun swimming! Take care, Carleon.

Thank you for the replies!  As long as our pool doesn't mandate disposables (I certainly hope not!)  I'm using my ME dipe, just as soon as it arrives.

I'm so confused over this topic and want reassurance.  So just the swim diaper is sufficient to hold a BF poo if DS should poo in the pool?  DS is 4.5 months.  Don't want to have anything unfortunate happen in the pool...

I would find out for sure what the pool's rules are...I take my 4 mo old to swimming lessons and it said right in the community center's guidebook no cloth diapers allowed (they probably do not know about reuseable swim diapers)  What I do however (don't think I'm gross - just cheap and trying to be environmental!) is reuse the little swimmer...if ds hasn't peed in it I just hang it up to dry and have used the same one up to 3 times.  They take a long time to dry but are just like new when they do.  Obv. if he pooed I would throw it out - there's no way it would hold anything in anyway as the smallest little swimmer is huge on him at this age!  I just keep my fingers crossed, haha

If you're concerned about keeping messes out of the pool the best (and only) thing you can do is make sure whichever swim diaper you use fits snuggly at the legs and waist. This will keep the solid portion of the poop out of the pool. There's nothing you can do to prevent urine, super liquidy poo or bacteria from entering the pool. If your little one pees or poops, it will happen, there's nothing that any diaper (cloth or disposable, swim or regular) can do to keep liquids inside. Once his bum hits the water, any absorbancy the diaper had will instantly disappear as it will be instantly saturated. Absorbancy in a swim diaper is meaningless unless you're concerned about the time just before you enter the pool. All that matters is a snug fit to keep solids inside. Everything else will be handled by the chlorine, that's what it's there for.

If you're concerned about pool regulations then you should check with your local pool. They *should* accept cloth swim diapers since there's nothing that a disposable can accomplish that they can't (if anything you could perhaps get a better fit with a cloth swim diaper so they could in fact function better!). But rules are made by people and not everyone is educated about cloth. What they *really* don't want is regular disposable diapers bursting in the pool and cloth/disposable diapers absorbing a ton of water, sagging under the weight and letting poop out into the water (this is why swim diapers have no absorbancy, to keep the diaper light when wet so that it doesn't get heavy/saggy).

I used to use Little Swimmers, because the industry has done such a good job of brainwashing us that disposables are better.  Then my DS peed straight through one and I started looking into it and realized that all anyone can hope for is a poop-catcher and I ordered a reusable, with which I've been very happy.
If your pool specifies no cloth diapers, that may mean just that, no cloth like terry, etc.  I can't imagine there would be any problems with an actual swim diaper that is snug-fitting (or if there is, I think it would probably be worth challenging.
I had some friends in a baby swim class that required an extra layer over any swim diaper, basically one of those long, tight shorts kind of swim suits (that you'd never want to change with poop in it, but which would offer another layer and the tightness to help keep things in.  So you could do something like that if it would help with peace of mind. Pricey up front, but those disposable swim diapers sure add up fast, too.

Darn, the guidelines all say Little Swimmers and plastic pants...if only they knew.  Can't wait to go to the lake where I can just use the swim diaper.

Maybe by plastic pants they mean cloth swim diapers? I'd ask for clarification on that and challenge it if you have the guts. Show them what a cloth swim diaper looks like and anyone that knows what the purpose of a swim diaper is (which admitedly your average 17 year old lifeguard may not!) will know that it'll work just as well if not better.

You may be pleasantly surprised in that the rules may not be written to specifically exclude cloth swim diapers but just because the people writting them aren't aware that they exist or that a significant number of people use them.

Oh, and someone mentioned washing the Little Swimmers. I have done exactly that! I didn't want to bother buying an actual swim diaper for my girls last year (they'd outgrown the old one) because they were close to potty training and we had only a few opportunities to use one (at home in our little kiddy pool I didn't really care). So I bought a pack of Little Swimmers on sale and just hand washed them to make sure the pack lasted me the whole summer (and then gave the leftovers to a friend at the end of the summer). It works great and I don't see anything gross about it. Obviously I wouldn't do it if there were poop inside, but if it's just pee (or more likely if you just don't really know) then it's fine!

Yeah, just ask.
I had a mama who used cloth swim diapers but posie daily diapers. The swim place(privately owned) had her kid wear a Little Swimmers posie under her cloth swim diaper.
Huh? What did that do?
But some places really believe in the power of the posie swimmer. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask for clarification and have what you'd like to use handy.
They might bend but they might not.
