please help!  my 14 month old has been in cloth for about 12 months.  we love our cloth diapers but have on and off battled a stinky smell.  we use simple green and washing soda and have been happy with that combo b/c she has had a horrible time with other detergents and rashes.  however, i feel like almost the moment her diaper is wet, it stinks to high heaven!  i have stripped them several times and i do not notice any suds. i guess my question is this:  is a stinky smell when wet the norm for cloth diapers?  should i just expect them to smell bad?  or do i have some other issue?  when she has occasionally been in disposables, the smell does not seem nearly so strong.  i use a few Tbs of the washing soda and a few squirts of simple green.  do i need to use more??  and i use a dry pail and wash every 2 days.  i love my diapers and want to keep using them, but it is embarrassing how strong she smells the moment she is wet!!  any suggestions are greatly appreciated!  please help!

No, that's definetly not normal. Daytime diapers shouldn't have any odor at all basically (unless you stick your nose right where the pee is, then you might smell a slight urine odor) unless they've been sitting in a pail for a couple of days. Sometimes nighttime diapers can smell pretty strong, but even then if the odor is a burn-your-eyes kind of odor, that's not really normal either.

When you checked for suds, did you check when it was agitating in hot or cold water? It's happened to me that checking a cold rinse revealed no suds, while a subsequent hot wash (with no detergent) revealed lots of them! Also, washing soda doesn't really suds much so that could be it too. Did the stripping help at least a little?

Exactly how much of the washing soda and Simple Green are you using (not sure what you mean by a 'few'). I never use more than 2-3 (usually more like 2 tablespoons, maybe even a smidge less) tablespoons of the washing soda and 3-4 squirts of the Simple Green. If you're using significantly more than that, then build-up may be possible. This recipe is probably way less likely to cause build-up than fancier detergents with all kinds of additives, but I imagine it's still possible (especially if you have hard water).

I'd try one last stripping. Start by soaking your diapers with lots and lots of vinegar. It's been suggested that soaking in a heavy concentration of vinegar (say at least 4-5 cups, if not more, per washer full of water) could really help loosen any detergent build-up. Then strip in water as hot as possible. Temporarily up the temp on your hot water heater and maybe consider adding some stock pots of boiling water (be very very careful handling boiling water!!). Hotter water will help dissolve build-up best and it'll help ensure there's no lingering bacteria causing the odors.

I'm not sure what else to suggest if that doesn't work. You can always experiment with additives like vinegar, baking soda, borax or tea tree oil (natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal).

Good luck, hopefully you get this figured out soon!

Karen.

I had a similar problem a few months back and I had to use Calgon (water softener) as we have hard water and regular stripping (with just hot water) wasn't enough to get rid of the build up...   I also have a front loader, so it took several washes and rinses (almost 10 altogether!!) to get rid of the build up I had from using the simple green/washing soda...  Now we are back using Tide Free (only 1 tbsp) together with some Calgon and everything is back to normal!  Good luck!

thank you both so much for your tips!  i will try to strip them much more aggressively than i have previously.  i will let you know how things turn out.

karen, thanks for letting me know that they shouldn't smell this bad... it encourages me to push through and continue to fix the problem!  thank you both!

I actually find that a healthy cloth diaper smells less than disposables.  I find that if I am close to my son in a disposable I can actually tell by smell when he pees, not because I smell urine, but because I smell whatever smell is released by the interaction of the urine and the gel.  And I can smell dirty diapers much faster, too (by their original scent, though!).
