Totally off subject but question about momma pads? (SAHM22)
Posted: 8:56:04 pm on 5/30/2008 Modified: Never

Does anyone use those cloth menstural momma pads? I know it is off subject, but it is cloth, right? I thought it was gross at first , but then I thought I should ask around. Most people (where I am from) think I am crazy for wanting to do cloth, but I am trying the natural thing and trying to save the enviornment. What are your thoughts? If so, what do you reccomend? How do you wash, store, etc. I feel weird asking, but you girls sure know a lot.

I thought about it, and ordered a sample of Luna Pads. It was very cute, but I didn't like the thickness (and it was just a pantiliner) and I'm just not a pad girl, always used tampons. I decided to go with the Diva Cup instead, and I can't say enough good things about it. There's just a learning curve to getting it in the right place so it doesn't feel like it's falling out or poking, and then it's the easiest, neatest and most comfortable thing. Best part - no waste! If you want to go cloth, I hear Luna Pads are excellent, but I think it's just not for me.

HTH!

I can't use tampons, so that would be the opposite for me. I have always used Always, so I thought about cloth or the non chlorine ones. Do you feel the cup thing there? How big is it?

I use cloth pads but got them off the internet so long ago I can't remember where I ordered them from. I love them and hate using the disposables now.

If you can't use tampons, it's likely not a great choice for you. I've always used them, and I still had a transition to the cup. It's pretty big and needs to be folded up into 4 and inserted, then twisted to "pop" open inside. Check out their website if you're interested - www. divacup.com and also lunapads.com .

hope you can find a better choice for you! You just might love these adorable cloth pads.

I LOVE using cloth pads! Many say you will never go back to using disposables once you try cloth pads! I know I am one of them I like the cloth pads made by a mama in BC --> www.homemademama.com. Check out her stuff. I have many of her pads and really like them - especially the bamboo velour ones. Her stuff is really good quality and well made.

As for washing, you can soak them in a small tub of cold water until washing day to prevent staining. But becuase I'm only 4 months post partum, I don't have my period back yet, so I haven't tried out my pads with a heavier flow (I'm using them mostly as pantyliners for now, so no soaking needed). I only discovered cloth pads after I got into cloth diapers. Now I am into everything cloth! I don't know why I've never thought of this stuff before!

There's also 'AMAZE pads' - slightly diff system (cloth pads are like cloth diapers - many diff types, materials & 'systems'). I've never personally tried them but have heard lots of people who like their system. http://hyenacart.com/AmazPadz/

I've heard that using cloth pads may surprise some people in that their flow tends to be lighter, reasoning is b/c disposable pads have this chemical in them that helps to 'draw out the blood', whereas cloth pads don't.

Good luck finding pads you like!
Kathy.

I have been using cloth pads for years! I got my first ones at Whole Foods but I can't even remember who made them. Now I buy mine from work-at-home moms at www.diaperswappers.com. They are so comfy. You can just wash them with the cloth diapers!

How many do you need? About the same as your disposables?

I first thought it was gross, too, but then I thought, I want to do cloth diapers... How is blood grosser than poop? So I bought LunaPads and I have used them only postpartum so far, as my period hasn't come back yet, and I quite liked them. A bit thick, but not enough to discourage me to do my part for the environment (and save money at the same time). I really like their pantyliners and their small pads, although the big pads seem a bit too much for me.

What I did is soak them in a small bucket of cold water or rinse them with my diaper sprayer, and then wash them with diapers. HTH

I'm curious about the chemical in sposies "drawing blood out" and therefore making some women feel they have heavy flows. Since I've been using cloth, I've noticed that there's not usually much blood in the pad. However, when I sit down to go to the bathroom...
Well, I'd rather it be there anyway! I just found that rather strange until reading PP about the chemical. I learn something new everyday!

I use both cloth mini-pads and the Keeper (basically the same thing as the Diva Cup). Don't necessarily assume that if you can't use tampons that you can't use a menstrual cup. It feels totally different and works in a pretty different way too. Tampons absorb liquid so they really interfere with the natural moisture balance in the vagina (and this is what links them with TSS, there's no such risk with menstrual cups). Just a thought, they might still not work for you but it might be worth looking into just in case. I just loooooooove mine sooooo much I just can't say enough good things about it. I totally forget I'm having my period and it's soooo much easier and less messy!!

I wear Lunapads as backup and for those last couple of really light days. Not that the Keeper leaks or anything, but for me there's always a couple of drops per day (it was the same with tampons for me) so I need a little something. I love my Lunapads and other than a couple of stains and some light pilling of the fabric, they're still like new, no signs of wear at all and I've been using them for 6 years!!

Karen.

I use the MoonCup (from the makers of the Keeper, but it's made of medical grade silicone instead of latex rubber) and I love it! Here is the link:

http://www.keeper.com/

The main benefit for me is that you can empty it 2x/day and it's totally fine, so when you're out and about, no need to worry about carrying extra pads, tampons, etc, and you basically forget you're having a period! I ordered a couple cloth pantyliners for the last couple nights of my period when the flow is very light and I don't have to bother using the cup at all... Good luck finding the right system for you!!

I don't really know how many you need as I still don't have my period 10 months postpartum. I read online that you could change only twice a day, which doesn't seem like much to me, but it would have to be tried. When I was researching the options, though, I thought it would be so nice if someone made a system as easy to figure out as Mother-Ease! It's not that different from diapers, I'm sure they could make a very good version of the momma pad if they wanted to! And I would have bought them...

WOW! I'm so glad you asked about this! I've been wondering about it, but didn't even know where to BEGIN to go to ask questions about such products, and whether they actually 'work' or not.
Anyone have a great source for mama pads in Ontario? (like to support a WAHM if possible!)
Thanks again for asking...wish I had thought to ask here sooner..duh! Such great moms with such great experience in all things cloth!!

I have some mama cloth from homemade mama and I love it! I don't use it much as I have a cup (Mooncup UK) and it rocks. Empty it twice a day and forget about it. If anyone wants a Diva, this store has a super sale: http://www.betterlife.com/ (see top right). So much better than disposables!

I'm wearing my Diva cup RIGHT NOW and I can't even tell it's there! I put it in while in the shower (as a PP suggested) and it took a few tries, but I can definitely tell when it's in properly. It just disappears and there's no sensation at all. I went all day forgetting about AF, and will empty it before bed. So neat, no leaks, I adore it!

Yesterday was my second heavy day (day 3). Day 2, I tried a few times and wasn't sure I had it right, so I went with the more traditional option ... I needed an emergency trip to the bathroom at Bulk Barn to avoid leaking all over the place after only 2 hours! I felt a big gush and thought oh oh .... Luckily they let me use it. Yesterday, I used my Diva and had a fabulous worry and leak-free day, and even went swimming!

Despite the steep learning curve, once it's in, it is totally fabulous. I'm sure I'll have an easier time with practice. I'm sold - I'd encourage every one of you to give it a try! I'll NEVER go back, and now I've ordered some cloth pantiliners to use in combo with it. Good bye disposables, for me and my baby!

Happy momma over here (can't you tell?) Post your success stories!
