Diaper is soaked all the way around... (mksmith00)

I just started cd'ing a few days ago and was surprised to see that every time I change my 7-week old, the diaper is soaked all the way through.  I think I expected just her bottom to be wet, but instead she is wet all around her belly, through to the doubled-over snaps in the front, etc.    Is this what people mean when they say "heavy wetter", or is this normal?  Should I put a liner in- fleece or something else?  I am changing her about every three hours- with every feeding, basically.  But perhaps I should change her more often??...

I just want to make sure I'm doing this right  Didn't know if this is just how it works...

I've always found it necessary to change or check every 90 minutes or so, especially with a young baby.  You could add a liner to increase absorbancy and then the diaper wouldn't be so wet.  Fleece would help the baby feel dry, but wouldn't hold any more moisture.  You could have a heavier wetter, but even my light wetter usually has a wet diaper after 2 hours

Wow!  So how do I handle nighttimes?  She is sleeping up to 6 hours at a stretch now-- I don't want to wake her up to change her.  I've kept her in disposables at night but was hoping to totally be using cloth soon.

You will want to add a few inserts for night time to make the diaper more absorbent. We use a fleece liner at night too, so it wicks the moisture into the diaper and keeps most of it off the skin.

(We use Fuzzi Bunz pockets at night stuffed with 2 regular microfiber inserts and one thick hemp insert. It makes for a HUGE diaper, but he always wakes up dry!)

Yeah, I agree, I'd say that at that age you're looking at changes every 1.5 - 2 hours... If you think she'll fall asleep soon after and you won't be able to change soon enough you can always add a liner. For nighttime just add as many liners as necessary to absorb and a fleece liner to keep her dry. It'll probably be soaked but for nighttime that's ok.

Karen.
