question Breaking down (paula)
Posted: 12:28:48 pm on 8/5/2008 Modified: Never

My diapers are on their 2nd child - my nephew used them for 2-3 years and my son has used them for 2 years - and they are very suddenly disintegrating!  Is this to be expected after 4-5 years of use?  We have always used organic detergent and a combination of line drying in warm months and using the dryer in colder months.  He's not showing enough signs of serious potty training yet, so it looks like I'll have to buy some more, but I'm disappointed as I didn't expect this to happen.  Is it to be expected?

Hi Paula,
Yes, it is normal that after 4-5 years to experience what you are.  After all, the diapers are just fabric and any fabric that is washed, say 2-3 times per week, is going to break down.  Truly, 5 years is a long life for cloth diapers!  Mother Ease are exceptional for long term usage and break down only after multiple kids have been through them, so don't feel let down by the diaper.  Most other brands would have bit the dust after 5 years of continual use!

I suggest you buy some of the ME liners (boosters to some) (snap in or not, depending if you have OS or Sandys) for added absorbency if you need it.  Hopefully you won't have to buy new diapers if you use a liner.

Good luck!

My diapers are still going strong as DS #2 is approaching two.  Anecdotally, I think this is far more common than having diapers begin to go after two children, but there are many factors, including how many diapers are in rotation, etc.  ME says their diapers should last through one child birth to PT.  While I think that most of us find our ME far more durable than that, that's the official expectation.
