Hello, experienced CD-ing mommies! I am 30 weeks with my first child and planning to cloth diaper with MEOSs as early as possible. Can anyone give me some advice about how to deal with the healing of the umbilical cord stump? For instance: Do the MEOSs fold down enough not to irritate the stump or is there something special I need to do? Should I not use the AirFlow covers while the stump is healing? Should I get some XS Sandie's for the early days instead of trying to use the OSs?
I am so grateful for the ME site and all the posts I've been able to read from such committed and knowledgeable moms - it's been very encouraging. Thank you so much! |

| I found the OS a bit big on a newborn, and couldn't get them folded far enough to not touch the stump. I think I started using them at 7-8 weeks, before that I used XSm Sandy's and disposables. If you're going to use cloth right from the start you might want to pick up a roll of Kushies disposable liners (they can actually be washed and reused if you want) because the meconium is really sticky and stains badly. |

Congrats on baby! Way to give cloth dipes a try! We used MEOS right from birth. Most of the time, we could get it folded under his stump. But there were a few times that it either rode up or someone else "helped out" and changed him, then the stump would stick to his diaper or get "gooey" from moisture wicking from the diaper. I think it took his stump longer to heal because of this. But eventually it did dry up and fall off like any other baby's would. We did use an AF cover too, with no issues. Cheers! |

Ladies - Thanks so much for your advice! I especially appreciate knowing how badly meconium can stain and I will definitely pick up some liners and probably some XS Sandy's (although I also appreciate knowing that the stump would probably be just fine, even if not left entirely uncovered at all times).
Thanks so much for helping out a new mom . |

| I couldn't use my one-size diapers until our kids were around 3 months old. |

| Yeah, I figured that might be a problem so I've invested in some used XS Sandy's with covers and I'm hoping that will get me through the transition. Thanks for letting me know your experience! |

| I'm sure you'll like the fit of your XS Sandys, and it should be nice to have something that gives a trimmer fit, but I did just want to say that I've used the OS from 6.5 lbs without any leaking at all (and I didn't even think it looked that huge, but it's all perception, I guess). So you'll have the XS when you want them, but I think you'd be surprised at how well the OS work at lower weights, even if they are a bit big-looking. |

| I'm so thankful to know that you were able to use you MEOSs well below to 10lb rating! I also don't think I'll care if they look a bit big, as long as they work, and am glad to know that they did for you. I was thinking that I might need to invest in more XS Sandy's, but now I think I'll hold off and see how things go - thanks for your comment, which will potentially save me both time and money. Much Appreciated! |

Yeah, with the little one, it wasn't so much poo leaks in the disposables that were getting me (he only went once a week or so), but it seemed like at least once a day when he peed it would end up out a leg with the disposables, and that's what made me try the OS and S Sandys at such a low weight. I figured I didn't have a lot to lose, and they worked just like they were supposed to--no more leaks!
I can't remember if I did this regularly or not when I had used the OS with such a low weight, but one way to kind of snug up the legs of the OS is to kind of run your finger around baby's leg and turn the hem in. Every once in a while (not at the low weights) I would have trouble getting the diaper completely under the cover, and that just kind of tidies it up and in a little. |
