  Yellow in dry pail (paula)
Posted: 11:19:06 am on 8/20/2008 Modified: Never

I've noticed the diapers coming out of the dry pail with a fluorescent yellow on them.  We've been using the diapers for 2 years (they came to us used), but this has only started appearing in the last 2 months.  Any idea what it is?  It comes out in the wash, with no discernible smell out of the ordinary (oh, and it doesn't smell when the yellow is showing, either).  Is it because I'm leaving them in the pail too long?  Now that he's started using the potty sporadically, we do use at least 1 less diaper per day.

Could it be from vitamins?

I don't think so.  I don't feed him vitamins (he's 2 yrs old).  My instinct says it might be mold, but I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced it before I jumped to conclusions.  This is, of course, Mummy guilt that I may not be washing them frequently enough.

How often are you washing?  I wash every 3, 3.5 days and don't see anything like that (if I wait 4 days, there's definitely a bit of a musty smell that isn't too healthy, but with this frequently, I honestly don't think there's mold/musty problems, at least for me).

Is the whole diaper yellow, or just areas that might have been peed on?  Any chance the diapers are drying out to the extent that only very concentrated pee is being left behind? (just an idea, don't know if that could really happen)

Mine are doing this too!!  Like you, we've PT and now only use dipes for sleeping times.  I think they turn yellow from the diaper drying b/c you aren't constantly putting more wet ones on top.  I'm pretty sure it's just dried pee, and I'm not too worried as long as it all comes out in the wash, right?

They're definitely not drying out - we are using cloth diapers all day (at least 4 - 6 during the day), and they're fully rinsed before they go in, so they're quite wet.  The PT is only at each diaper change, but it hasn't replaced diapers yet because it's only JUST started.

The question about "is it pee" ... no, definitely not (diapers are fully rinsed before going in the pail) and doesn't smell of it, either.  I think it's mold from sitting too long ... we're not washing as frequently as you  ... probably every 5 - 6 days.  I'll make a real effort to wash them more frequently and see if that helps.

That does sound like a bit long between washings.  If you're not wanting to run small loads, sometimes what I do if I have a small load (like when I'm travelling so don't have the full stash), is I run the diapers through a rinse and then wash other whites/hot clothes with them.

Thanx - I'm going to try washing them every 3 days and see how it goes.  We have to pay to use our shared laundry facility (the downside to apartment living), but washing that frequently will allow me to hang them to dry, so I can save there.

So that makes the pre-rinse and then add thing kind of hard, too, probably.

If they are only peed-in diapers, personally I'd still feel okay about washing them with other stuff.  I'd rinse them well at the outset, but even that probably isn't an issue because urine should be so water-soluable.

When my first was PTing I already had another in diapers, but I'm sure hoping that this becomes an issue for me before too long!  :-)

I've noticed recently orange and purple stains in our diaper pail. At first, I thought it was an orange washcloth that ran, so I stopped using them. The stains appeared again today along with purple stains. We haven't changed her diet at all (still mostly nursed) and we rinse all diapers, both wet and dirty, before putting them in the bucket. I've very confused!

If it is something growing - fungus or bacteria - it's probably in the diaper pail/liner and the diapers.  You might want to try running the diapers with a little tiny bit of <gasp> bleach, or wash regularly with borax, or make sure they are being disinfected in some other way (boiling them will work, too) until you stop seeing the color come back.  Also be sure to thoroughly bleach the diaper pail.  If it is something alive, if you don't kill all of it, you'll just reinfect the diapers every time they go back in the pail...

I'd believe yellow is just from urine, esp. if it's in the pee spots, etc, but purple would sure raise my eyebrows.

You could try something like tea tree oil, in a stronger dose than typical, in with the diapers in the wash, as it has natural disinfectant properties and isn't as harsh as bleach.  Vinegar does also have some disinfectant abilities, so I spray my pails down with it every wash and find that I no longer have to do the periodic bleach-in-pail that I did to keep them smelling fine (in this case, bleaching your pail might be a good idea, just suggested a vinegar spray could help for maintenance).
