  Getting the Softness Back (krista54ed)

I was wondering if anyone has ideas about making used diapers soft again? I stored my older child's diapers in a rubber-made bin once she outgrew them. I hadn't noticed how rough they had gotten until I put her in the brand-new bigger size and compared the difference. My second child is due in October and I'd like this baby to be able to have at least some softness in the hand-me-down diapers.

FYI, I've used all eco-friendly detergents (mostly "Sun & Earth" or "Seventh Generation") all along and not a drop of fabric softener. I also alternated between line drying and using the dryer, with the dryer occurring more often.

Thanks,

Krista

One thought is that eco-friendly detergents can sometimes act a little more like a soap, and thus be a bit prone to leave behind something like soap-scum.  You could try soaking the diapers in very hot water and a lot of vinegar (if you have a top-loader, this is pretty easy:  pour in a boiling kettle or stockpot to make the water even hotter, then let it sit and maybe just have it agitate once in a while).  I don't know that will be a magic solution, but vinegar is considered a natural fabric softener and its acidity can also help break up soap scum.  It really can't hurt anything, so might be worth a try.  Just make sure you rinse them well afterwards.

I've heard that dryer balls can make stuff softer. You could try those. I use vinegar in the final rinse, and if I happen to miss that part of the cycle, my babe's dipes aren't nearly as soft. So that works for us. I've also heard that people use "ecover" fabric softener?? I've read about it on other forums and it's not supposed to affect the absorbency or build-up on the diapers. You could research that and see if it might work for you.
Cheers!

Thanks so much for these suggestions. I had heard of the magic of vinegar, but hadn't tried it myself. I'll definitely give it a go now and hope for the best. Then I'll give those fabric softener ideas a try.

Thanks again!

Soapnuts seem to help also... I had some used diapers that were quite stiff, and the soapnuts seemed to make them a little softer.
