New to ME -- major problems! HELP!! (lauramarie)

I am new to ME, love the diapers, but ready to QUIT!!  Just received the dipers (mix of regular sandy's and bamboo) 3 weeks ago, and we already have horrible ammonia smell when the kids wet them. Too, my son has an awful rash.  We've since gone back to disposables. I've stripped them three times in just hot water, and put calgon in the final rinse.  Any suggestions??

To wash I was just using about a 1 1/2 tbsp of washing soda, small amt. of vinegar in rinse cycle.

Thanks!!

I don't think that washing soda alone works to clean.  The box says that you should add it to your detergent to boost washing power.  You could try either using Simple Green with the washing soda, or a small amount of your regular detergent.  Also, I don't think that you should add the calgon in the final rinse.  If anything you should add it with the detergent as it is a water softener to make the detergent more effective at removing dirt.  Try washing your diapers with just the detergent first.  Then rinse them until there are no suds in the rinse water.  Also cheap fleece is great for making liners for your diapers so that you can use a diaper rash cream without worrying about ruining your diapers.

Thanks Tamara...I was using about a half to one teaspoon of simple green w/ the washing soda (sorry, thought I had written that in the post).  I guess I'll try one more time w/ the detergent/calgon and see what happens.

I use vinegar(1 cup) in my final rinses too, each and every time. So I doubt that it's that. Besides, vinegar is supposed to rinse cleanly. And fix the PH of urine also.
How much washing soda are you using? I do use washing soda too(2 tbs), but in addition to soapnuts. Not alone. Mostly for the clean smell, the soapnuts alone cleaned just fine but I still thought my dipes had a faint urine smell.
Maybe I shouldn't stick my nose in diapers????
Anywhoo, do you hang dry or dryer dry? Any fabric softener that might cause buildup? I know that Calgon is technically a "water softener", but is it possible that has accumulated in the dipes? Mostly since it was in the final rinse?
How old are your babes? Older children have more concentrated urine, so when they pee, boy you know it! But usually kids smell worse in posies than when they pee than cloth.
Rash.....yucky. Man rashes suck! Could be a sensitivity to something in the dipes. Maybe it's what's causing them to reek.
When you strip them, maybe just use hot water and that's it. No chemicals or additives. Nothing but water. Then try them again. Maybe little one won't get a red bum next time?
I don't know if I helped you or not, but man I feel for you! Keep the faith sister! All us mamas will do our best to help you figure this thing out!
Cheers!

Just wanted to say that my little guy got a nasty rash when we used Simple Green and it took a lot of wash/rinses to get of it!  I still think simple green is too powerful to be used on something that is in contact with baby skin so much!  Just my opinion (and personal experience!)  We are using Washing soda (only about 1 Tbsp) together with some Calgon (no Simple Green) in a front loader and vinegar in the rinse and it's working great!

Good luck!

Totally agree with everything everyone's said so far. Just wanted to ask how often you're changing the diapers? We can get away with a little more time between changes when using disposables. With cloth you should aim for every 1.5 - 3 hours, depending on the age of the child etc... Fleece can be helpful for very sensitive children or for nighttime/naps.

Any particular reason you're using the Calgon? It's a great additive if you have hard water but if not then it's probably not necessary. Not that I'm convinced it's the cause of your problems, but sometimes it's just better to start as simple as possible and then add steps/additives only if necessary.

Karen.

I dry just about 15-20 minutes, than hang dry the remaining time outside.  I just started the calgon after I stripped the dipes, b/c our water is so hard (and we don't have a water softner).  So that's new to my "process" and its still not doing the trick.

Thanks for your advice!

I just started Calgon (after I stripped the diapers)...b/c our water is VERY hard, and since we currently don't have a water softener
I thought that may be the problem.  I definitly change the diapers w/in the time frame you mentioned, but do need to p/u some fleece.

Thanks for your help!
Laura
