Hello ladies,
I purchased 24 OS bamboo diapers just after they were put on sale last year (my son was due in August), then another 12 OS a few months after his birth. When people started having issues with their Bamboo diapers, I thought I had dodged a bullet as mine were still going strong. Now, though, I just noticed that they are starting to tear.
I have been using them for about a year now, as my son is 13 months old but I used XS Sandy's in the beginning. I wash about every 2 days, but as I have 36 diapers they don't all get used in those 2 days. Still, they get a lot of use and abuse, and I wouldn't expect any other sort of clothing to take that kind of use and still be going strong after a year. Yet I DID expect my diapers to go longer, and even do for my next child.
So is this just wear and tear or am I experiencing the same issue as some other people had before, but several months later than everybody else? I don't remember exactly what the problem was back then, but what I noticed is that on at least 7 or 8 of my diapers (plus maybe more in the batch that is dirty now and that I haven't verified yet), there are tears on the very edge of the diaper in between the legs, on the piece of fabric that seems to be binding everything together. Hard to explain (especially when English is your second language), but it is basically the very edge of the OS diaper ripping, it's not on the seam. It does, however, seem like it would be the part of the diaper that would get the most wear.
Should I contact ME, or is this to be expected after a year? I know that our water is very soft here, but could that explain why my diapers would take so much longer than others to start tearing?
Thanks for any advice! |

Nope, that's not normal at all. That's exactly the problem that people are having with their One-Size. The rest of the diaper is fine but the binding at the edge starts to fall apart, develop holes etc... Definetly call ME and they should replace them for you.
I would actually expect the rest of the diaper to start developing bald spots and such before I'd expect the binding to start showing that kind of wear, but then I've never had a One-Size long enough to really know from experience. Either way though, it's not normal to have that kind of wear after less than a year of use, especially that you have quite a few.
I'm not sure why but there definetly seems to be a wide variety of time it takes for the problem to show up. I had some start to show the wear last November while others didn't start till about 1 or 2 months ago. A friend who used them from birth with her son that was born in June started having problems less than 2 months ago...
Karen.

I have only one bamboo OS, purchased last fall, and it only fairly recently started wearing out along the binding. I contacted ME by e-mail and they sent me a replacement and a postage-paid envelope to return the faulty diaper to them. I, too, had thought I might have dodged the faulty binding issue, but I think I didn't see it as soon as many because until recently I was using it in a large rotation and line-drying. The first hole was small, but once it appeared, more of the binding began to go pretty quickly. I have some cotton OS that I've been using continuously for over 3.5 years and they are still going strong, with no apparent thinning to the main diaper and absolutely no problems with the binding. ME changed the binding they're using and they've been very good about replacing the bamboo diapers that develop binding problems. |

I also had some wide variety in binding issues. I bought 6 bamboo OS in August and 1 dyed bamboo OS from KarenC in the fall (thanks Karen!). Initially I had problems with only 2 of my diapers in January and a few months later all of my originals began to have problems. They were all replaced by ME. My dyed diaper didn't show any wear until recently and now looks pretty frayed. I love my rainbow diaper though so I haven't tried to have it replaced yet.
I would contact motherease. They very recently encouraged anyone with binding issues to contact them. |

Yeah Mother-Ease!
I sent them an email last night and they replied this morning that they would replace ALL 36 of my diapers, even those that are not tearing yet. I was pretty sure they would replace the broken ones, as I have yet to hear a single bad comment about their customer service. But I am impressed that they will replace all of them. They believe that all 36 of my diapers were pre-change in binding, so they won't take any chances.
So I will get 36 brand new, ultra-soft, bamboo diapers (with no blueberry-pooh stains)! I'm definitely a happy camper! |
