question Will the hospital object to my use of cloth diapers during my stay? (newcdconvert)

My husband thinks that the hospital will object to us having a wet bag in our room because the hospital needs to maintain a high level of cleanliness, and the hospital may staff may perceive that cloth diapering is unsanitary (though we all know it is sanitary), and will not allow us to do so. He is also worried about meconium getting on the diapers and having to use cloth wipes to clean it with. He doesn't want to have to clean poopy diapers while in the hospital. My husband will not be in the room with me 100% of the time as we have a toddler. I say that when he takes our toddler home, he should take care of our dirty diapers at home, and rinse the wet ones and poopy ones as we do with our toddler's. What's your take on this?

Anyone try washable female hygiene pads after birth, while in the hospital too?

I used them in the hospital. I don't see it as a problem at all. You are not usually in long enough. I had a wet bag threw the wipes and diapers in it. I was in from Saturday left Monday morning. There is no smell to newborn diapers. I used washable pads at home not in the hospital. The nurses help with peri care, that is too  much for them I think.

I did use them a little when we had to go back in for a couple of nights with one of the twins that had a touch of jaundice. I didn't use them on the baby that was hospitalized, just in case a nurse ended up changing her diaper and then did goodness knows what with it... But I did use them a bit on the non-hospitalized baby that was in the room with us anyway. The staff saw me with the cloth diapers and they didn't say a word so I wouldn't necessarily expect any huge objections. Hospitals do want a certain level of sanitization, but wether you use cloth dipes or not there will be 'dirty' laundry in your room anyway. There might be dirty baby blankets or clothing, soiled change pads and perhaps soiled sheets. Our hospital even uses cloth wipes and those are kept in a little plastic bag... Even the dirty disposable diapers would be in your room for about a day (until the cleaning service empties your garbage cans). So all in all, except for the heavy sanitizers they'll use when cleaning your room, it's hardly a sanitary environement...

For what it's worth, cloth wipes actually make poopy cleanup easier. They can 'scrub' away poop on skin much much easier than disposable wipes. This is something you'll appreciate especially with the meconium as it tends to be so sticky.

Oh, and if you're breastfeeding, he won't have to do anything with them when he gets home. He can just put them in the pail and then when it comes time to wash you just run a pre-rinse. Exclusively breastfed baby poop is water-soluble (so will all come out in the pre-rinse) and hardly smells (so won't stink up your room or the pail).

The only thing I'd be cautious with using cloth diapers at the hospital is that the hospital staff doesn't accidently throw them away or put them in the hospital laundry. Probably wouldn't happen but you never know... Oh and consider that if your baby spends time in the nursery that the nurses may not know what to do with your diapers when they change them... Other than that I see no problems with using cloth from the very beginning. If you're worried about meconium stains you can just use fleece or disposable liners. I used two disposable liners one on top of the other just to be sure and it worked fine. Any minimal stains just sunned out...

Karen.

I think that it would depend a lot on hospital policies where you are. My baby never left our room and the nurses never changed him after they put the very first diaper on him, so I assume it would have been relatively easy to deal with cloth diapers. We didn't as I had heard other people complain about diapers disappearing when the nurses took care of their baby. We used the hospital's disposables until we were ready to go, then changed him into cloth just before we left so we wouldn't bring any disposable home. It worked really well for us, but if I was you I would inquire as to what the policies are at your hospital.

As for cloth pads, I used them after I came home - actually, after my mom left. She stayed with us for 2 weeks to help with the newborn, and she already wasn't sure about the cloth diaper thing, so I didn't want to have the "cloth pads" conversation with her (she was doing laundry). I really liked it, but I think that they wouldn't have been absorbent enough for the first few days at the hospital - or at least I wouldn't have had enough as I would have had to change very often. I did hear some people say that they used prefolds or cloth diaper doublers for pads, that may work better for the first few days?

Good luck!
