  Yeast infection (mayaps)
Posted: 8:51:36 am on 9/29/2008 Modified: Never

We are on our 2nd round of cd'ing -- but #2 is giving us some concerns.  He is getting yeast infections where the dipes rub -- waistline and along thighs.  We change the diapers hourly and it's not alleviating the issue.

Our doctor has suggested laying off the cloth for a while to allow moisture to be wicked away quicker.  We already use fleece liners -- and I've even supersized them to keep the moisture away.  We also use aquafor and diaper creams to keep the area impervious to moisture.  We currently spend as much time OUT of a diaper as possible, but it's not very convenient as the weather gets colder.

Has anyone else encountered this?  What worked for you?

We have the same problem right now!   I think it's yeast because it's not going away.  I even used disp. diapers for almost a week, but it did not get better, so I went back to cloth.  I need advice too!

Have you tried using an over the counter yeast med. applied to the rash?
If it is yeast you will have to strip your CD's.  I think washing them in really really hot water has helped.
Good luck

The diapers (and liners) are currently run through 2 pre-washes (with either vinegar, borax, or baking soda) and 1 full wash (with extra rinse), all in hot water.  Could you elaborate what you mean by stripping them?

Doctor has prescribed an anti-yeast medication as well, applied topically 2x/day.

I second the OTC yeast creme. It really sounds as if you are trying alot of things to alleviate the issue, but it's not helping? Like, at all? Does it get better and then come back or just never really change, even with airing out or barriers or fleece liners or posies? My other suggestion would be to strip the dipes(that way, no more yeasties hiding away to come back) and maybe just try the bare minimum for coverage. Like maybe no liners, just the dipes and a cover. And after it's gone(hopefully), no cremes or barriers? Sometimes less is more. Just a thought anyway.....
Rashes & yeasties are a bummer, aren't they?
Cheers!

All the diaper rash tricks in the book don't usually do much for yeast, it's really pretty tough and you need something to kill the fungus. Airing out, fleece liners, normal 'hot' stripping of the diapers etc... are all great for the skin and to prevent/treat 'regular' diaper rash, but they're unlikely to truly 'cure' yeast. You need an anti-fungal agent for that so your doctors cream is really your best bet. I dealt with a recurring yeast rash with my first dd and it was horrible. I could air her out, use all the barrier creams in the world, use disposables for weeks at a time and nothing ever really cured it. I got a prescription cream from my doc and within a week it was totally gone and it never came back.

Yeast can be resistant to 'normal' washing methods, even regular stripping. It might not be a problem (it wasn't for us) but sometimes the diapers do require more specific treatment to remove all the yeast inside and prevent reinfection. For that you need high heat (much higher than normal, as in boiling/steam temps) or an anti-fungal agent such as tea tree oil etc... Bleach will do the job as well but that would be a last resort personally...

Oh, and be careful with barrier creams when using anti-fungals. If you use both at the same time, be sure the anti-fungal goes *first* and that there's no residue of the barrier cream on the skin. The barrier cream can help protect skin but it also 'protects' the fungus and prevents the anti-fungal cream from doing it's job...

For what this is worth, my DS had 2 yeast infections maybe.  The first one got so out of control because I thought it was a diaper rash.  Anyway, my doctor did prescribe using the antifungal and then desatin on top.  (I used pinxalve but the Pharmacist said it was the same idea).  Anyway, it was better in 1 application, not gone but better.  The only thing is he reccommended every change, I did it 2 times a day.  Anyway, good luck.

My daughter had the exact same rash....along the pelvis and the thighs where the diapers would rub. i too tried sposies, but they were no better.  Here is what I did after consultation with my homeopathic dr.:
1). Contniued with cloth, but used fleece liners to protect cloth dipes from being ruined by creams
2). I applied (twice a day) canestan yeast cream, followed by Ihles paste diaper rash cream. The zinc content is high in this cream (25%) and there are no dyes or perfumes added. By the way, the Ihle's paste was applied at every diaper change.
3). Twice a day when I did not apply canestan, I applied 0.5% hydrocortisone cream, followed by Ihle's paste. You can only use cortisone cream for a max of 7 days.
4). For bathing, I used baby dove...again no perfumes or dyes.
This rash was extremely persistent (7 weeks) and it prevented my little one from sleeping. Once I tried the above routine it took about 1 week to get rid of. Now I often use antifungal canetsan whenever my dd has a rash...I find it helps with the itch that often keeps her up at night. The most important thing is to change the dipes regularly and use products that are non perfumed...that causes a lot of irritation.
I hope you have the same success with the above routine as I did.
Liz

By the way, be sure that all of the Ihle's paste is off before applying canestan or cortisone cream. I used almond oil to take it off as it is not as harsh as baby oil. I would take the zonc off with almond oil and then with a soapy solution, clean off the almond oil and let my dd's bum air out before applying another round of cream. You only have to take the zinc off before putting on canestan or cotisone....otherwise, you can leave the zinc on.
Good luck!

LizB (or others with experience) - Did you boil your diapers?  If so, at what point during the infection?  I'm worried b/c my infant daughter and toddler son have been sharing the OS diapers, and I do't want him to get it.  She's in disposables now for a few days, but I want to go back to cloth. I guess I could keep their diapers separate.

My son had yeast a couple of times and I found OTC Nystatin useful to get it mostly under control. Now we use Burt's Bee's diaper cream all the time and he's not had a problem since. It has calendula in it which is a natural antifungal, a good amount of zinc oxide (can't remember the %) and smells really nice. There's a few other creams with calendula but BB's is all natural. Plus a little goes a long way so it lasts.
Good luck!

HI,
sorry it took so long to get back to you. I washed my dipes as usual in hot water, but I added a lot of vinegar as well as a few drops of tea tree oil. Actually, that is what I always do. I find the vinegar and tea tree oil help to control the spread of the yeast.
Hope that helps!

Have you tried drying them outside in the sunshine?  Yeast hates ultraviolet light.  (Plus the sun will help lighten or eliminate any stains your diapers may have.)  Yeast will also take advantage of damaged skin so I would make sure the diaper and cover are not tight and creating a rub line of damaged skin for the yeast to grow in.

Thanks everyone for your tips.  We've stripped our diapers and tried various suggestions (our diapers are already sun-dried and washed regularly with vinegar), but we've switched to disposables at this point.  It breaks my heart to admit it -- but it hurts more to see the rash reappear each time we've tried to put him into cloth.  He's clearly not comfortable -- and we're changing diapers every 20-40 minutes so he's not in a wet diaper for very long.

#1 has had NO problems using the same diapers -- and we were a bit concerned about cross-contamination.  But nothing has appeared on him.

We are using the nystatin and keeping up with the barrier creams, and we've returned to cloth twice (weekends when we can closely monitor), but the rash reappears -- it's been 2 weeks so we're trying to be patient.

Thanks again!

May I ask, are you breastfeeding? If so, cut out all sugar and yeast from your diet for 2-4 weeks since yeast feeds off of those. That is what I had to do to finally get my twins' yeast infections gone. You can use a natural sugar like agave nectar or xylitol, but nothing else. You also need to stay away from fruits except for granny smith apples (they don't break down into sugar the same as other fruits). It is very hard, but it is definitely worth it when you see the yeast infection going away.Memoriesmama--Mother to seven girls!

You might want to consider giving your baby some pro biotics. They are not easy to find for babies, but 2 good ones are HMF Natagene or Bio K. Also if your child is teething, it could be making the rash worse. If this is the case, then patience is key. My baby's rash took a montha dn a half to go away, but is gone and has been gone for almost a month.
Good luck!

Girl, we feel for you. But sometimes after you've exhausted all avenues and tried just everything, maybe it's time to throw in the towel(err, diaper...) If babe's skin just doesn't like the diaper binding, then I'd say stop using them. If baby is uncomfortable, then it's not worth it really, for our "wanting" to overtake their "comfort". You've tried, we've offered, but  still....
Could be an allergy to the binding material. Could be yeast. Could be rash. Buildup. Chemical reaction. You could try a different kind of cloth diaper, if you have the money and want to try. I'm totally anti-posie. But not anti-comfort for baby. Sometimes you gotta just admit when you're beat. Don't know if that helped or not.
But nobody knows your baby better than you, and what's best for that little squirt. Whatever you decide, it's for the best! Believe it!
Cheers!
