I am just looking into chaning to cloth diapers and wanted some advice on the best way to do that. My daughter is almost 8 months old, and it suddenly hit me that cloth diapers may be better (after accidentally washing a disposable in with her clothes....yikes!). Anyhow, What all would be needed to use cloth diapers? My best friend is using the mother-ease diapers right now and loves them, so I figure they're a really good product, but don't know what all to get. I asked her as well, but with a newborn inthe house it might take more time to get a response from her Anyhow, girl's crying away, any advice would be appreciated! Thanks all! |

A good list of 'basics' for full-time cloth diapering is about 2 dozen diapers, 4-6 diaper covers, a diaper 'pail', 1-2 extra absorbancy liners per nighttime diaper and maybe 2-3 dozen cloth wipes.
You could get by with less diapers and wash more frequently (2 dozen should allow you to wash every 2-3 days) or buy a few more and wash a little less frequently or line dry the diapers. For the pail, any fairly large container with a tight fitting lid will do fine, doesn't have to be a 'real' diaper pail. The cloth wipes are optional but they work better than disposable wipes and you just wash them with your diapers.
There are a few other things that can make your life a little easier or whatever, but that's a good starting point. Hang around here a little, ask all the questions you want and you'll figure all this out soon enough! Welcome to the board!
Karen.

Welcome to CDing! When I started, I thought it was going to be more work, more leaks--you know, a sacrifice, basically, but something I was willing to do for the environment and my child. I WAS WRONG! I love CDing. Most of us find that we have better performance with ME diapers than with disposables (sorry you missed the benefits with that newborn poop!), and I honestly believe that once you get going it's no more work than disposables, just different work.
What Karen lists is pretty much what I use to CD, although if you wash 2-3 days, you might want a few more extra liners for nighttime use (gives you more latitude for line-drying, not being on top of the wash, etc). You can buy cloth wipes from ME, but most people just use either baby washcloths (you know, the ones you got 137 of for baby showers) or cheap regular washclothes. They pay for themselves in no time flat, and, as Karen mentioned, do a much better job with the cleaning.
ME diapers are excellent. There are two basic types, the OneSize (OS) and the Sandys. The OS is meant to fit baby from birth to potty-training, and the Sandys come in two sizes, S and L (well, and XS, but that's hardly relevant to you right now). There are pros and cons to both, and it's largely a matter of personal preference. I personally use mostly OS (about 20), with 6 L Sandys, which I use mostly for nighttime (they are a smidge more absorbant, but also a smidge bulkier). If your friend has one or both types, perhaps you could do a try-on. ME also sells trial packages that contain a diaper, extra absorbant liner, and cover for a good price. The OS is the one listed on the website, but you can get a Sandys trial if you call. |
