Hello,
I would like to use prefolds until my new baby's umbilical cord falls off, and also tie me over with a few spares while my OS diapers are in the wash. Once the cord falls off, I don't mind the bulkiness of the OS diapers, because I will most likely keep my lil one in a Onesie, and some Baby Legs, or a gown, or a Onesie and a wearable blanket, I could careless about whether the diaper swallows him or her up as long as the pee or poop remains contained.
I was thinking about purchasing some DSQ prefolds and using it with a Rikki Wrap and a Snappi. If any of you have experienced this combo, what did you think of the performance? How well do the prefolds hold poo from breast fed babies? I'm sure that the absorbency does not compare to ME dipes, but I was thinking of using a cloth wipe as a doubler for added protection.
Are prefolds hard to fold? I checked out what a Snappi looks like, and it looks like a neat little gadget, but the teeth look painful if it would get caught on baby's skin. Has anyone ever experienced the Snappi becoming undone? How about the wooly part of the velcro on the Rikki wrap (the part in the middle that the applix attaches to), do newborns become irritated by it if baby is held in a certain position?
I plan to carry my newborn in a sling (Moby Wrap), will the prefolds make it awkward to carry a baby in it? How about the OS, would the bulk at to awkwardness at all?
I decided that if the prefolds weren't for me, then I'd use them as burping cloths since I found that when I used a popular brand from a big box retailer, that spit up would literally "jump off" the cloth or dribble away on to the floor. I wonder about the fact that since 'm used to the OS diapers if I may find the prefolds to be inconvenient. I'm also a busy grad student with lots of deadlines, and my hubby is in the military, so sometimes he gone for months at a time.
What's your take on this?
Has anybody tried Polar Babies prefolds? |

I've never used anything but ME for dipes, so I can't comment on Snappys or PF but I still carry around my hunk of chunk 10 month old on an EllaRoo carrier with no issues of bulkiness. You can absolutely wear a baby wrap using cloth dipes. As a matter of fact, I'd venture to guess that a fairly good percentage of wrap users also use cloth dipes. We're cut from the same cloth, so to speak. LOL! Welcome to the wonderful world of cloth diapers! Cheers! |

Ditto on the carrier. I used a CuddlyWrap, which from what I can see looks exactly the same as the Moby wrap, and I think that the bulk of the OS on my 7-pound newborn helped, if anything. My DS didn't like lying sideways, so pretty much right away we installed him straight up in the wrap, and the big bum made him feel more secure in there.
As for prefolds, I never used them either, but I want to mention that I used OS before my baby's cord stump fell off and I didn't have any problem. The cord did get caught in the cover once (and my DH almost ripped the stump off when removing the cover in one fell swoop, but that's another story), but you would still use covers with prefolds so that wouldn't change anything. Anyway, I know that lots of mums have used OS or Sandys right from the start, so I just thought I'd mention it in case it makes a difference for you! |

I've used prefolds before and although they're not as convenient as my fitted diapers, they're not as bad as I thought they would be either. The absorbancy is pretty good, probably about the same. Although this does depend on the size you're using (preemie prefolds are pretty small and thinner than infant sized) but generally speaking, prefolds are absorbant diapers.
Prefolds essentially don't hold poo in at all (except maybe the firmest solid foods poo and even that doesn't always happen). It's almost guaranteed to end up on your diaper cover because there's no elastic and that's probably the biggest inconvenience. You shouldn't end up with leaks though, just some poop on the cover... Snappis and various folds may help a little but it's almost impossible to completly elliminate.
Snappis aren't really 'sharp' as such and shouldn't hurt your or your little one. The plastic 'teeth' could theoretically scratch the skin but you'd really pretty much have to do on purpose for that to happen. Only time I've had a snappi come undone is if I didn't put it on properly in the first place.
With a Rikky wrap (or any velcro wrap) you don't really need a snappi though. You can just fold the prefold in thirds, place in the wrap and then fasten on baby. Snappis can possibly help contain poop a little more, but with a velcro wrap it's not necessary. If you're using Airflows that's a different story though, the waist isn't nearly as snug so it wouldn't keep a prefold in place properly.
Folding really isn't complicated, the simplest fold is really just to fold it in thirds and that's it. You can get a little more 'complicated' but it's not like folding a flat, where you feel like you're doing origami or something! It's not so much complicated or difficult, just a bit of an extra step...
My one bit of advice is just to make sure you get quality prefolds, either true Chinese Prefolds (CPFs), Indian Prefolds (IPFs) or DSQ like you mentioned. Big box stores often sell prefolds but the quality is usually very poor.
HTH and good luck with your new little one!
Karen.

| I used premium prefolds, a snappi and airflow covers untill my dd was around ten pounds. I thought it was a wonderful combination. I never had any trouble with them holding poo. Folding is not hard either. I just folded it in thirds the long way, opened the side that would be on the back and placed baby on diaper, brought the rest of it up between the legs and closed it with the snappi. We did have to adjust the rise a bit for the first week, but you just fold the back end a little and you will be fine. |

| Thanks for your advice regarding the prefolds. I'm considering purchasing perhaps three prefolds and a snappi to "get a taste" of how it would work before I invest in a bunch for my newborn. I have a feeling that I'll probably want to order more OS dipes to share with both babes, since it will probably be a better investment anyway. If I figure out that the prefolds aren't for me, I'd probably save it as a burping cloth or cleaning rag. |

| Hi - Congrats on your new little one! I just wanted to add my 2 cents... I have never used the prefolds on a newborn, but use them occasionally on my 15 month old (since she was around 7 months). I am due for my second in March. My daughter was 7.5 pounds newborn and the one size were just huge, so I used nb kissaluvs and xs Sandys. I don't have enough to really get me by in the first few weeks of tininess, so this time I am planning on using some nb prefolds I accidentally got (the person who sold them to me said they were the infant size). BUT! I am going to make them "prefitted," with elastic around the legs and the back to contain those powerful BF poos. then, I will snappy them. I love those snappys. They won't come undone, provided you fasten it correctly, which is not difficult. I found terrific instructions for sewing wonderfully absorbent prefitteds very quickly (about 30 minutes). I have a couple of bigger ones I use on my daughter, so I know they work well. Let me know if you are interested in the instructions or seeing a pic or two of the prefitteds. Of course, I will say as I know everyone will agree, there is no substitute for ME, OS or Sandy's. My XS Sandy's served me so well last time around, and I look forward to using them again! Good luck! |

| I love my prefolds with a snappy. I have pocket dipes, a few AIO, and lots of fitteds for daycare- but I find when I am home with my 3-month old, I always reach for the prefold. They are very convenient and absorbent- just make sure to get the cover on well so poops don't go everywhere! |
