question Rash with Sandy but not OS? (JBear)

Hi,

This forum has been an immensely helpful resource over the last 20 months that I have been cloth-diapering my son.  I've registered to ask a specific question as a search did not seem to yield anyone with a similar situation.

My son has been in the one-size diapers since birth, and they've always worked really well for him.  As we're now expecting #2, I purchased a dozen brand new large Sandys off ebay to augment our stash (obviously kid # 1 wears Sandys + some OS's, kid # 2 will be in the OS's for a while).

When I received the Sandys I prewashed them as normal, and added them into our cycle.  They worked well for the first few weeks.  I treat them exactly as I treat the one-sized diapers they are mixed in with: dry pail, cold rinse, hot wash with a small amount of detergent, air dry in the sun.

I have noticed that whenever my son is in the Sandys, he gets a terrible diaper rash.  Whenever we pick up a OS from the stash, his poor bottom recovers.

What could be causing this problem?  Should I be doing something different with the Sandy diapers?

Other info to help with your trouble-shooting:

* He is changed every 2 hours
* We used to use the fleece liners, but no longer do.  They seem to make very little difference.
* Sudocream clears up the rash eventually, but I would like to not have to use it in the first place if I could figure this riddle out!

Thank you so much for any ideas you may have!

Hmmm, never heard of that. Are the Sandy's a different fabric than the One-Size? I'm assuming they've been prewashed/washed often enough by now that anything on them from where you got them would have been washed out... Hmmm, I can't think of anything else. They're pretty different diapers but only from a design point of view, the fabric itself is the same thing (assuming they're both regular cotton or both bamboo or whatever).

Could you have a tendancy to unknowingly do something different when using them? Like maybe since they're a little more absorbant could you unconsciously be leaving him in them longer? Just a thought, I really can't see how just the style of diaper could give a baby diaper rash. Only thing I could possibly see is maybe a friction rash of some kind if they're much too tight (or even too loose if it causes them to move around more).

I don't know, maybe someone else has better insight...

Karen.

The only thing that I can think of is that the Sandys have an extra layer of fabric (think I've got that right? that's why they're a little more absorbant?).  If you are borderline for detergent issues with the OS, maybe the the Sandys show that sooner because they are just a smidge harder to rinse out?
That's a bit of a long shot, esp. since you say you use little detergent anyway and I would think that you would perhaps have seen issues by now with the OS if you were having detergent troubles.  That is truly a strange one!

Thanks for your thoughts on this - it is a puzzler!

I guess friction due to the diaper being too loose is a possibility, although they've never leaked so I don't think they're *that* loose.

They are the same fabric as the OS we have - regular cotton.  It really does seem like there is something else in them though.  Do you think I could wash them with something (I don't know - vinegar?  tea tree oil?) to "strip" them?  (I don't really know what I'm talking about in this area ... just guessing).

In the meantime, I will try changing him more frequently when he is wearing the Sandys and see if that makes a difference - I'll keep you posted!

Thanks!

1) I had my DS in a Sandys today and noticed that they seemed bulky up front (I usually use them at night).  His scrotum seemed kind of red when I changed him, and I had to wonder if it was from the bulk chafing somehow.  I don't know as this would have been an issue if his shorts had been larger (fit fine with the OS, though).  Who knows, that could have been anything, really, but thought I'd mention it.

2) Are you getting any smells with the Sandys that you aren't with the OS?  A strong ammonia smell is usually present if you do have buildup issues.

3) Although who knows if it has anything to do with anything, if you want to try something, it probably wouldn't hurt to fill your washer (if you have a top-loader; otherwise have to get creative with the tub or something) with hot hot hot water (like put a kettle of water in there if you can) and lots of vinegar (think in terms of cups or parts of jugs).  Agitate the diapers a bit but stop the cycle and let them soak in the hot water and vinegar.  The vinegar can help to break up detergent residues in the diapers; you might be surprised by how many suds you see in the water if you have a machine agitate once in a while.  You do want to make sure you rinse the diapers well to get out the vinegar.

TTO isn't going to help with any stripping of any sort, but I do add a few drops to my pre-wash.  I like the smell and I like that it has some antifungal/bacterial properties.  I've done without, but it does seem to help me keep my diapers in a happier place.  If your OS have been happy for this long, though, I can't think that you have serious detergent issues or that adding something to your routine is the answer, but I suppose these aren't hard things to try . . .
