Handmade cloth wipes? (gatorgal98)

Hello! Has anyone tried to make their own cloth wipes? I like to sew, and would like to try, but I don't have a serger. Also, which fabrics do you use? Is all flannel ok, or does terry clean better?

I had alot of receiving blankets that I saved from my first son 8 years ago. I figured little bro deserved new ones, so I just saved a few to use as blankets and turned the rest into 8 x 8 cloth wipes. They work great and are cute prints also. I just ran a simple stitch around the edges and a stitch across the middle since I doubled the material. Just normal receiving blanket material. 10 months and going strong. I just wash them with the dipes. I have about 40 wipes that last me 3 days.

Sounds like a good idea- do you have a problem with the edges fraying? Thanks for the info!

thanks! I think of it as recycling. The edges fray like denim, so you'll want to sew a line around the outside border. If you give me your email, I can send you a photo. I don't know how to post pics on here.

Thanks! Sorry for the delay, I just now saw you replied. Yes, a picture would be great! amberh@planters.net

Also, do you make you own wipe solution? What have you found works the best? Any experience with a wipe warmer?

I have about half my own wipes and half ME. I bought the ME ones when they were much cheaper! The ones I made are also from terry and I doubled them. I just used an over edge stitch. You could also zigzag the edges. Some I used a different color for bobbin and top thread and others I used a veragated thread. I like the terry because it has a little texture to clean better. I have only ever used water with my boys.

Thanks for your reply! Did you buy terry at a fabric store, or use washcloths or towels? I've never bought it at a store- is terry expensive?

I just use washcloths. I bought them at a discount store and they work great.

I bought the terry (bamboo/cotton baby loop or something like that) at www.celticclothswholesale.com. I had bought it when ordering PUL to make a wet bag.
