are leaks actually avoidable?? (heather w)

Hi,
I'm new to this forum but there seems to be a wealth of info out there so here's my question.
My son is 14mos and has been in cloth since 2mos. I was given some HipBaby one size diapers which have been great but have had increasing problems with leaking. Neither of us really mind but it is a bit of a pain. The diapers still fit but I'm finding that the leg grippers of the covers wick moisture from the diaper on his pants. I've bought some used AIOs which are only good for an hour or so. He could just be a big pee-er, though I haven't tried using extra liners. The thought of cloth for nighttime is utterly ridiculous at this point but I am intrigued at the mere possibility. I'm thinking of getting some more diapers as he'll be in them for a while yet and I'm planning on more tots, and ME have been getting great reviews. I'm curious about others' experiences with their big bladder babies and what worked and didn't.
Thanks a lot.

My super blowouter is barely blowouting in his ME.  We used sposies and he blew out alot.  I have the ocassional wet clothes but that is my fault because you do have to make sure the diaper is completely in the cover before putting their cloths on.  I have resorted to sposies though at night because he cries at night and does not like being wet.  I am working on a woolie for bedtime hoping this will help.  He is 22 mths old and potty training sort of (on his terms).  Anyway I love ME!!

What kind of covers are you using? I've found that cover quality varies enormously and this can make a big big difference in leaks. The elastic at the legs/waist of a cover shouldn't be just regular elastic because that can wick moisture from a wet diaper onto clothing. ME covers their elastic to prevent exactly that. AIOs can vary enormously in quality as well... Boosting the absorbancy of the diaper (AIO or the HipBaby fitted) may help but if the cover is of poor quality then it won't help much.

I've found that my ME diapers NEVER leak. And this isn't at all an exageration. I've used them on three babies (my son was a VERY heavy wetter, my twins aren't now but they were in the past) and throughout the thousands of times I've put diapers on the three of them I can probably count on one hand the number of leaks I've had. No blowouts, no pee leaks during feedings, naps or even with a sopping wet 12+ hour nighttime diaper. When I used disposables (especially on my son or first daughter), they would leak frequently so it's not like I have kids that never leaked out of anything... And when I was using cheaper diapers and especially cheaper covers, I would get leaks every so often too. ME (and a few other quality brands) never ever leak.

And this isn't just my personal experience. I've converted or introduced at least 3 friends to Mother-Ease and they've all said the same thing. They either never leak at all or at the very least leak wayyyy less than disposables or other brands of cloth.

I would advise getting an ME trial pack. They're very inexpensive (depends on the diaper chosen but usually around $20 for a diaper, cover and liner, all taxes and shipping included) so you can try it out without little risk or cost. The regular cotton One-Size/Airflow trial pack is on the website but you can call them to try the Sandy's diapers, another fabric (like organic cotton or bamboo) or the Rikky's cover. For nighttime with an older, heavy wetting baby like yours, I'd recomend the Lg Sandy's with one or more liners. You could give the bamboo a shot, they're the same absorbancy as cotton diapers but because the fabric itself is more absorbant the diaper is significantly trimmer. That way, if necessary, you could use 2-3 liners without adding as much bulk...

Karen.

I have a 14-month-old who does blow out of disposables and I have no problem with ME diapers. He sleeps about 11 hours at night with a OS plus 2 liners; everything is usually soaked in the morning, but no leak. I'm not sure if he's a heavy wetter, but I have had disposables leak pee onto his clothes... Never with cloth.

Good luck!

I've got a number of different covers, most of them are Kushies or Bummies. It doesn't seem to matter if there's an extra "skirt" like the ME Rikki or not. I think I'll get a OS and a LG Sandy with the two different ME covers and see what works best. Thanks for you input!

I used Kushies with my first and they would constantly wick moisture from the diapers to her clothing. The minute the diaper got the least bit wet, it would wick right to her clothing. And I couldn't reuse the cover more than once because the elastic was always wet with urine. That never happens with my ME covers. Bummis were a lot better but still not as good as my Airflows...

It's not so much the gusset that makes a difference (that's what I'm assuming you're talking about, the extra piece of fabric along the legs??). The Airflows don't have one, they're what I've almost always used and never had leaks. It's that ME covers the elastic with a waterproof fabric so that liquids don't wick. Now if the diaper underneath isn't absorbant enough and there's lots of liquid, then this won't make a difference. But if it's just a matter of a wet diaper touching the elastic, then the elastic won't wick moisture to clothing.

Karen.

The leaks I have had with ME have been when I didn't tuck the diaper in all the way and when the diaper got completely saturated (forgot the liner at night). When I used the OS (rather than the Sandy's) I had some trouble with my boys' loose stools (as they often are even as toddlers) escaping past the elastic of the in side of the legs on the diaper and soiling the cover (but not past the elastic on the cover. The other night (L bamboo Sandy, liner and airflow) my son had a big wet spot on the bed--but in changing him he was barely wet and no diaper was sticking out. I have no clue what happened there, but it was a one time thing. One of my boys had diarrhea this week and this will attest to how leak proof ME diapers are. I was not prepared for this diaper! I opened up the diaper and the diarrhea streamed down his belly, onto his chest, and there was a huge puddle on the changing pad--but nothing had leaked from the diaper! Yes, these diaper are truly leak-free (except by operator error)!

We are now cloth diapering our 8th.  We switched back and forth between cd and disposables with the first 3 because of leaking issues.  That was before we found ME.  We were introduced to ME diapers 8 1/2 years ago with baby #4.  We have used ME Sandy's diapers ever since.  (Also ME Airflow covers only.  The cover makes a huge difference.)  Never any leaky poopy diapers even while exclusively breastfeeding.  The only wet leaks we have had have been from a diaper sticking out of the cover - user fault, or a soaked out diaper - child not changed soon enough.  Night time use for us is a Sandy's diaper and stay- dry liner.  We have found that we usually need to move up to a larger size at night before during the day (for more absorbency).    My husband is 100% behind me in using ME cd.  In fact he thinks Sandy's diapers should be called Father-ease.

Just want to add to all of the wonderful ladys' above comments.  I have just one daughter - but a heavy wetting one, who is 15 months old.  I have tried many of the common dipes out there - kissaluvs, bamboozles, sammies, bumgenius, fuzzibunz, etc. - (way more, but I can't think anymore) and most of the common covers, too.  Mother-ease, simply, are the best - the only ones that really just don't leak.  Of course, some are more absorbent than others.  I would say, you would be best off trying out the Sandy's with an airflow.  They airflow is just amazing.  That combo with a soaker on the inside is sure to avoid a leak.  I think I would even put money on it! By the way, to support my position on the leak proof airflow, I have changed overnight dipes on my daughter that were dripping wet, yet with no leaks, due to that awesome cover!  Good luck!
