question Bad Rash (maryjomar)
Posted: 9:36:47 pm on 11/7/2008 Modified: Never

I am wondering if anyone experienced their LO getting a bad rash but only in patches?? It seems to have started since I started using only ME CDs. I had been using disposables at night. It's almost like a chaffing rash - I am also finding that our diapers aren't as soft as they had been when we first started using them. It's been about 3 months of use now - 1 week of CDs at night too - on our 6 month old boy. I've tried diaper cream from the doctor for diaper rash, but it's not helping which leads me to think it's the diapers. We've ordered some new detergent (Nellie's All Natural Laundry Soda Nuggets) in hopes that will help but I thought I would post here to see what else I can try???? In the meantime, I'm back to disposables for now to help his bum/legs clear up.

PS. How do you let a baby go diaperless for a bit each day?? Our LO likes to pee all the time his diaper is off - now that it's too cold to go outside in the grass, what to do??

Thanks!!!

MJ

Hi MJ!  Sorry to hear about your little one.  Rashes can be a real pain.  I have had to deal some bad rashes because my 16 month old seems to have sensitive skin.  now that I have been CDing for a while and have read up on some stuff, I suspect some of it has to do with detergent build up and our hard water.  So, I read the following article which really explains things well.  I haven't tried it yet, but we are planning to stop buying store detergent all together (provided it works) and use her home made one which contains simple green and arm and hammer super washing soda.  So, that was one thought.  The other has to do with the rash.  My daughter's mattress, as with most crib mattresses is water proof.  I just tuck in a few towels on top of it and let her sleep with a teeshirt on and nothing else.  The rash always improves a lot over night.  It may also be a yeast rash.  Just put some miconazol  cream or some other over the counter vaginal yeast cream on it (there are a few different types, but they seen to work well).  Just buy the simple 7 day tube.  I always have those left over tubes they provide for the outer stuff around.  Definitely, diaperless overnights are the way to go.  You may feel sorry for the baby when you check on them and they have wet, but when you see how much the open air has helped, you will forgive yourself!  It works wonders!  Try the yeast cream and the diperless overnight all at once!  Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for all of those suggestions! Do you have a link to the article that you're referring to perchance??? We have had issues with yeast in the past but never to this degree, but thanks for reminding me - I didn't even think about that. Thanks again and we'll try the diaperless thing and the yeast cream tonight!

For going diaperless during the day you could just leave the cover off, that way they get lots of air but there's something there to absorb the pee.  Pick up a pair or 2 of babylegs to keep baby's legs warm and you're all set.  It's actually much easier this way, and I leave my little guy like this most of the time at home.

You can also do the coverless thing at night. Just really stuff the diaper with extra liners so that it's super absorbant (that way the outside isn't super wet so the sheets may only get a little wet instead of soaked).

It could also be as simple as his skin needs a little stay-dry protection at night since he's then spending so long in a wet diaper. You can buy commercial stay-dry liners or just make your own with some polyester fleece. Any old fleece will do as long as it's polyester, just cut to the size/shape you need and that's it. No sewing necessary since fleece doesn't unravel. Fleece (or other stay-dry fabrics in commercial liners, like suedecloth) work because they don't absorb liquids but let them pass through. That way urine passes through the fleece liner to be absorbed by the diaper but since the fleece doesn't actually absorb hardly any of it, it dries almost instantly, thereby keeping your little one's skin much dryer. Works just like the stay-dry lining in a disposable...

A little more absorbancy may also help if the diaper is really saturated in the morning...

Karen.

Before DS started crawling, I would put down an old shower curtain (or two) and let him roll and squirm around on the floor.  It was actually kind of a fun time, since I would get down on the floor with him.  That was only for half an hour or so, though!
Another thought is that if you have a pack and play, you could put down some towels in there (maybe over some barrier, depending on how wipeable the base is).  He can have a good time without your feeling like you have to chase him around to catch the puddles.
I do have a hard time getting bare-bottom time in in the winter because we don't keep our house warm enough for a semi-naked child--I've just been lucky that we've been okay without thus far!

Sorry MJ - I thought I put the link in there...  Here it is!

It was in the recent thread "cloth diapering advice."

We had a really hard time, too, with rashes that went away only to come back and I struggled with the diaper-free question since we have carpets all over the place. I did the cover-free thing quite a bit. I also found out that thick, fleece sweat pants held the pee in quite well - I guess that's why some people use fleece covers... So it can work for when it's not warm enough to leave your baby bare-legged, or even at night.

At 6 months, your LO is probably starting to be a lot more active, which could make for some friction on the diaper. We had a similar problem when our DS started cruising/walking. In our case, his skin was always better in the morning, despite a soaking wet overnight diaper, which led me to think it was the rubbing that was the culprit. It cleared when I stopped using stay-dry liners - I discovered that by mistake one day when I was out - and I'm not sure at all what the link was, maybe there was a buildup in the liners, maybe they were rubbing...

I know it can be a real pain, but stick to it, try different things and eventually it will likely get better, whether it was only a stage in your LO's life (more acidic food, more activity, who knows?) or you'll find a combination of things that seem to work even if you may not know why...
