Hello - I was wondering if anyone had any advice concerning diapering or anything else that is different when you have a large baby. My eleven WEEK old ds is 17 lbs. and 25 inches long. He is almost ready to move into 6 - 9 month clothing and is only an inch away from outgrowing his infant carseat! He has grown 7 lbs. and 5 inches since he was born. He is exclusively breastfed. Will this slow down at some point? At this rate, I think my back will be broken in a few months
I am already using liners in all of my night time diapers and also during the day if I know he will be down for a long nap because he pees a lot! His diapers are usually soaked.
I had read some old posts and had a couple of specific questions. I read that many consider sandys a better fit for larger babies. I am currently using the OS and would prefer to stay with them. What would be the pros or cons for going with one or the other in this situation?
Also I was wondering about cover sizing. We are using mediums already. Would it be better to skip to the larges instead of the ml next?
Any advice - diapering or other - would be appreciated! Thanks so much! |

Howdy mama to a big boy! My son outgrew his basket carrier at 4 months(20lbs) and his convertible seat's max weight of 35lbs at 10 months. My son often gets confused for a 2 year old, as he is big all over, not chubby, but huge. I switched to Sandy's at 6 mos of age because I was worried my son would outgrow his OS. We kept 4 of the OS for his diaper bag, and he is on the last snap on each side. And he turns 1 tomorrow! Sandy's have a little higher absorbency than OS. And the rise on the Sandy seems lower than the OS, so the fit is different, which may be why Sandy's seem to fit big babies better. Will your boy slow down? Some. But my feeling is if they start big, they seem to continue to follow that bigger growth curve. Can you stay with OS? Sure. ME sells extended tabs for the OS, so you could go that route if you reach the last snaps on your OS. I had all cover sizes. I myself would skip the M/L if I had to do it all over again. The M/L covers are closer to the M covers anyway in size. To me, it wasn't worth the money since he outgrew stuff so fast. He was in his M/L cover for maybe a month. He will slow down some, he has to! Or else he'd be a 5' tall kindergartener! At least, that's what my hubby says. I'm still waiting for that to happen! But I feel for you girl! Parenting is expensive enough when they grow normally, but when you have a XXL...... |

My DS#1 wasn't quite such a bruiser, heavy but not long, but I will say on a non-diaper note: take care of your wrists! I started having tendon problems when I never really did before or since. I guess lifting those ponderous thighs for diaper changes just took its toll or something . . .
If I were in your situation, I'd probably skip the M/L. I don't know if you're using any Rikkis (probably not since they don't come in M/L), but I found that the L Rikki fit smaller than the L AF, so I'd stick with the AF. I do think that the L Sandys will fit most kids to a higher weight than the OS, but it can so depend on build. If you've got the OS and like them, I'd stick with them until you have a real reason to get something bigger; at that point it might be the Toddleease anyway! You can use the OS on the very last snap (only one snapped on each side) if you need to. I found that my DS peed a lot and needed the extra liner as long as he was breast-fed, even when he was eating solids and even when I was down to nursing only twice a day. Once I stopped breast-feeding him, no more super-peeing. All that to say, he might not always need the extra liners just because he does now (and that will also give you a trimmer fit with the OS).
So nakedbabytoes, I have a good friend whose daughter was not 5' tall in kindergarten but is at least 5' at 7 years old! Her son (one year) is giving my (small two-year-old) DS#2 hand-me-downs . . . |

| LOL! Weird....it's like he was switched at birth or something! He's a giant and has flaming red hair. Genes are wacky sometimes! You just never know what you're gonna get! |

I have (had!) a gigantic baby as well. He outgrew his infant bucket at 3 months, was always 95+ percentile on the growth charts. He was 16 lbs. at 16 weeks, 24 lbs. at a year. He was also exclusively breastfed (no solids) for a very long time, 18 months (sensory issues), and for a long time after so it wasn't his diet. He was wearing 18 month clothes at 9 months.
I only used Sandys, so I can't speak for the one size dipes, but they worked very very well for him. He outgrew the small Sandys at 7 months, moved him into the larges then. As for the covers, don't bother with the M/L covers unless you're planning for more children. My boy outgrew those covers in a matter of weeks, but he was in the large covers for over 2 years! But my girl has been in the M/Ls for a while.
He will slow down in growth, don't worry. My boy pretty much stopped gaining weight once he hit 2, he just kept getting taller and leaning out. But the first year of his life was crazy with the growth, people thought he was a two year old when he was still an infant, he was so big. And of course, when he acted like a typical infant, he was treated rudely by strangers who thought he should act his perceived age. That was my only problem with having a big kid! |

I really found the MLs to be useless, not much bigger than medium and not much smaller than large. My tot is 18 mos and for the very first time, i've had to order the XL covers! This is my fourth child and apparently my largest. I have dozens of covers from the other babies, and she wore mediums for the first couple months and straight into larges. I've only got a couple sandys and I don't see them as much better than the os, they might absorb a bit more, but i just put in a doubler or something if i need extra. |

| Thanks for all the replies! I will go ahead and skip the ML covers. I am already snapping my sons diapers on the very last folded over snap setting at the waist on my one size diapers. That only leaves me with one more snap to go on each side once I start not folding over his diapers. Is that going to be enough? I am starting to get a little worried that he won't fit in them throughout his diapered years. How much extra space will the extenders give me? |
|

|
If you call or e-mail ME, they can give you measurements on the extender tabs, but I think they get you something like at least an each on each side. For a little while we snapped only the very last snap on each side (not folded over) and that worked well. I wasn't sure that would hold, but no problems. Although every baby is different, many stop gaining so much weight and even slim out in the waist once they get active. My bigger DS#1 didn't really do that, but he did slow the weight gain enough for the OS to work until PTing. He was 29 lbs at a year, but only about 34 lb at 2 years. |

| Don't forget that once you stop folding the diaper over, you will most likely have to tighten it a little bit more to make up for the bulk you will lose. That might help the diapers last a little longer, too! |

Help!!
My son had another growth spurt and now I am having poop explosions everywhere! With the diaper folded over, he gets a little plumber's crack going on and his bm's shoot right out the back. If I unfold the diaper, then the diaper gaps around his legs terribly - even on the tightest snap setting - and he leaks urine and bm out of the gaps. I have leaks -in and out of the cover - like crazy no matter how I snap his diaper!
What do I do?? Has anyone else had this happen? Would switching to sandys likely fix it? I'm a bit at my wits end here!!
Help! |

I had the plumber's crack issue with the S Sandys when my larger DS#1 was about 17/18 pounds or so. That was solved by moving to the L Sandys. For some reason, we didn't have the plumber's crack problem with the OS at the same time and continued using them folded-over for some time longer, and I never had leg-leak issues with him (but his thighs were truly massive, I realize now, although at the time that was just normal). I would imagine that the L Sandys might at this point offer a better fit. That'a pretty pricey, though, replacing a stash, so a couple of thoughts. Are you using an absorbant liner with the OS? If not, that might provide a littler more bulk in the crotch to firm up the fit there a bit. One other thing that might be worth trying for pretty cheap would be using something like a snappi a little lower than usual for a more customized fit by the legs. I haven't done that, just speculating, so maybe someone who's used snappis could comment on whether they think that might work.

I am using absorbant liners in all of my diapers now. I've even tried putting two in and I am still having problems sometimes. I think my SIL has snappis...maybe I will ask to borrow one of hers and see if that helps.
Would moving to a larger cover help? I did notice that the top of the cover is just covering the top of the diaper. He still has more snaps to go on the medium cover but perhaps the rise is becoming an issue? Also, will a large sandy fit in a medium cover? I was wanting to just skip to the large cover. He is at 18 1/2 lbs. now. Is that too early to switch to the large? |

Not sure about medium covers fitting Large Sandy's. Even though you bought my bamboo ones from me(thanks, by the way!), they are slighly more bulky than an OS and have leg & waist gathers, so they tend to stick out farther on the legs & up higher on the waist. So you might be tucking stuff into your mediums. Is there room to tuck in your mediums? I'll be sending your dipes out today, hoping you get them before Xmas. Try them for a few days in Medium covers and see what you think. Let me know how it goes. I could make you a deal on my 5 printed AF covers and switch my boy to all XL covers. He's boarderline L XL right now anyway. Just a thought. Cheers! |

I haven't used bamboo L Sandys, but agree that you'd have better success with a L cover. If babe is big enough for a L diaper, he'd big enough for a L cover. The cover sizes are pretty flexible, anyway. Many people are able to use the sizes for longer than the recommended weights, but you can also usually use them at lower weights. If you think you are borderline for rise on the M cover, that can't be helping the leaks.
One benefit of racing through covers is that they should have good resale when you can say you've only used them for x time! |
