Hey again. So I've read that CDs are much bulkier, so it causes some clothes not to fit. Can an average newborn still wear 0-3 month pants and jeans? I've been scared to buy bottoms because I don't want his little CD'd tushy to be too big for them! Is there a rule of thumb, like buy the next size larger, or is it not that big of a deal?
Thanks again!

My answer is "It depends..." It depends on the size of your baby 7lbs? 9lbs? This can be hard to guess if you are still expecting. It also depends on the diaper. We have 8 children. We found ME when our 4th was 7 mo. and have used Sandy's ever since. When our 5th was born I purchased the Sandy's xsm. Because we have used these with more than one baby the investment has paid off. With the xsm all of the last four have been able to wear 0-3 month clothing even my two 9 pounders. I have never used the one size diapers so someone else will have to speak for those. I understand that they are bulkier than the Sandy's. It also depends on the pants. Cotton knit usually does pretty well. However, although the little jeans look sooo cute they are often very stiff over any diaper, especially cloth. It often looks like the baby can't sit up because the denim won't bend over the bulk of the diaper. Of course the thickness/heaviness of the denim also makes a difference. I often try to find one piece outfits/rompers. They almost always work buying the correct size. You may need to buy up one size on some pants and cuff them. I usually just try to find pants that look roomy, this is something you will learn with use, but I know that does not help now. Hope this helps a little, Julie |

I agree with the previous poster. One piece outfits like rompers, overalls or dresses for girls are great and usually make the cloth thing a non-issue.
One warning though... Regardless of what kind of diaper you use (even disposable), don't buy too many newborn or 0-3 month outfits. At that age they'll likely spend most of their time in sleepers and they'll outgrow those outfits sooooooo quickly that if you have too many you'll surely find you never even get the opportunity to put them on the baby before he/she outgrows it! Obviously it depends on how big your baby is but those sizes are often outgrown within a couple weeks so they're really NOT a good investment. Consider also that tiny outfits are very popular baby shower or Christmas gifts...

Pants fitting can so depend on baby's build, but I will agree with the PPs--go for one-piece outfits! Even if pants fit, one-pieces are so nice and easy, and then you don't have to worry about it. As Karen said, too, people love to give newborn-sized clothes, and it can almost be a race to use them at all, so I wouldn't be in a rush to by any. My chunky DS#1 couldn't comfortably wear any pants until the 18-mo size a little before a year (very rolled legs). They were just too tight around the waist, even with disposables. Skinny DS#2 could wear cotton pants from about the 6-9 mo size (which is good because we were given a bunch!). I agree about staying away from jeans; they are generally just too stiff for little ones until they are a bit older. I generally found that my boys, despite their very, very different builds, have been able to wear most clothes true to ages, pants being the exception.
On a related note: many manufacturers seem to have changed the way they label clothes. What used to be labelled 6-9 mos now seems to often be called 9 mos. When you look at the weights, it's 6-9 months, not to start being worn at 9 mos. I find this pretty annoying, since it caused me to put away some outfits and then not be able to use them since I didn't know. So look at the tags carefully. That being said, although many manufacturers seem to have about the same sizes, some are out on the extremes (like the 12 mo outfit my 4 mo old could wear!), and then if you put in dryer-shrunken hand-me-downs into the mix, you kind of learn not to trust the labels too much. Lay all your baby clothes out and organize them from small to large by laying them on top of each other, and then you'll have a better idea of when you can use what. I just put them in those piles into my storage tub, and when I needed more clothes/the next size, I just went in and pulled off all the clothes that seemed about the same size, regardless of what the tags said.

| Thanks for the replies! I do have a 4 yr old already, so I know about the sizes "normally" and all, I'm just new to the CD world. My first was born in summer, and this one due in January so I was looking to buy just a couple cute little pants or jeans, cause they are SOOOO cute on a newbie! I have a ton of rompers and sleepers already, and I'll just wait and see for the new stuff. Thanks again! |
