  Irritation from fleece liners? (newtwinmommy)

Does this sound crazy?  I'm not sure if that is what we have going on... but my poor little guy has very ouchy, sore red spots on the tip of his little penis.    I feel so horrible for him!
He is one year old and has been wearing cloth since he was about 3 weeks old, and has NEVER had a problem like this.  I think he's only ever had a mild diaper rash once or twice.
About 2 weeks ago, I started putting a fleece liner in his diaper at nighttime.  He has become a very heavy wetter and I thought it would be more comfortable for him to be a bit drier.  Well.... about a week ago I noticed he was getting red, then sore, and now there are a few open sores on his poor little thing!
Just wondered if anyone else has had this trouble?  At this point I hate to stop using the fleece - I WANT to keep him dry now that he is so sore, but I am really thinking that the fleece caused him the trouble in the first place....
LMK what you think... thanks!!

Might be just a co-incidence? Now, I'm about 4 days into this fleece insert thing, so I am by no means an expert. But unless your son has an allergy to what fleece is made out of(which I would think would mean a rash wherever the fleece touches him, not just on the end of his penis), I can't see why it would be the fleece. Every once in a while my boy gets a sore on the end of his penis too, it's something that doesn't happen often and seems to come from no where. I just be sure to wipe him down after every diaper change and put a big glob of Aquafor on it. A couple of diaper changes later, it's gone. I don't think it's yeast as I haven't ever used yeast creme and it still goes away. It's almost like it's a contact sore or something. My older son gets one underneath his penis sometimes in the winter and he wears undies. So, at least in my case, it seems to be a contact sore and not caused by fungus or an allergy or their skin just not liking a certain kind of material against it. That's my experience anyway.
Cheers!

Hello. I have another point of view for you to consider. My little guy, also one year, had from what you described the very same thing. I have 25 one size pocket diapers that are fleece that he has worn since day one. My doctor said it was casued by a fungus and perscribed a cream-Nystatin. It went away in 4 days. Now I use 1/4 bleach once a month on my diapers. I'm thinking it was an accumulation of bacteria in the diapers. I've just bought a babmboo diaper to try. Hope this helps!

Hello,

A while ago I had horrible rash problems with my little one. I had been using stay-dry liners from day one with no problem, but around one year he started having big rashes that would go away only to come back. I tried everything and one day I didn't use liners and the rash went away just like that.

I still don't know what the link was. I don't think he was allergic to the fabric since it was only in specific areas and not the whole bum. I thought it was due to rubbing since he had started walking; I also wondered if there could be a buildup in my liners. But I tried fleece liners for a few days (new fleece, so no build-up possible) and the rash seemed just as bad. The funny thing is I use stay-dry at night with no problem whatsoever (the thicker kind of stay-dry liner sowed on top of a cotton booster), but the thin, stay-dry only barrier was apparently causing a problem.

All that to say that if your son was fine with no liner and develops issues with a liner, maybe you'll have to quit using the liner even if you don't know exactly what the problem is... Unless you're more patient than I am in investigating the root cause. But if your son sleeps fine and doesn't seem to suffer from the night wetness without a fleece liner, it may be that you need it more than he does...

I am by no means an expert, but I do know that fleece does not breath.  It could be yeast or a fungus, but it could also be exacerbated by the heat and lack of ventilation from the fleece.  Good luck!
