Hey again. I am due in 5 weeks, and yesterday received, which i thought, was the last part of my diaper stash. I now have 12 sm sandys, 13 OS, and 4 AF covers. Though a lot of people say all this will be fine on a newborn, I cant help but think they look huge! I am seriously considering buying some prefolds and xs rikki wraps as well. I don't have any experience with CD, but I've done a LOT of research on this forum and other sites. I don't want to get discouraged and end up buying newborn disposables!! Any advice?

I used OS from day one on my son, and yes they are big and bulky. They were so loose around his chicken legs that I thought there's no way these things will hold in poo! But they did! The way I see it is more personal preference than anything else. If you think you'll be bothered by the bulk, then have some newborn prefolds handy and ready to go so that temptation won't be there to buy posies since you wouldn't have anything on hand but the bulky OS, which worry you. They grow so darn fast that even if you just deal with the bulk at the newborn stage, by month 3, it'll be a distant memory! You CAN use the OS successfully with a newborn, so it's more of a "look" issue. Because they work great! Lots better than posies at containing baby poo!
Cheers!

I agree 100% with the previous poster. I used OS from day one on a 7 pound boy, and the first time I put them on I thought it was ridiculous and I must be doing something wrong. Actually, I thought the same thing when I put him in XS Sandy's for the first time. But after a few days, my perception had changed, he had grown a bit, and everything looked fine. It always worked wonderfully.

On the other hand, if you think you might be tempted to get disposables, you might as well get now something that you will be more comfortable using. From talking with other moms around me, I found that a lot of those who used disposables in the beginning but intended to switch to cloth later, when things got easier, never did. I think it's easier when you get right into it and create your routine from the start. I'm not saying that you can't use disposables once in a while, and to be fair, I think that several moms on this forum used disposables until their baby's umbilical stump fell off. But you'll be swamped and sleep-deprived in the beginning and if you hate your CDs, you'll be more likely to grab a pack of disposables at the drugstore than to find some prefolds, etc.

In the end, I think it all depends on your commitment to CD. If you think you'll be likely to switch to disposables if things go wrong, then think of a Plan B right away. If you know that you are going to stick to cloth because your diapers will work on a newborn and you'll just put up with the bulk, then you'll get used to it. Really!

I started using sposies. I didnt want to deal with meconium stains or taking cloth to the hosp. I planned on using till cord fell off, then at night time. Was worried about leaks. I used them for 2 wks as I didnt have any covers for my cds. (TG a cding friend sent me some pfs and ME covers. I thought the only thing out there was gerber plastic pants, which we used for a couple days till the ME covers came).
I had the dipes from the hosp and someone gave a pack as a gift but I refused to buy more sposies.
[When I started cloth, I used reg sized prefolds...not even infant. So dd had major fluffy rump! Even when I used the pfs trifolded in the rikki wrap. She is 2 mos and still has some bulk if I use a premium pf..but I have gotten used to it and it doesnt seem to bother her.]
I then started using cloth half the night. When dd would wake to eat, I would change into sposie. Then we went all cloth all the time.
I will tell you, had more leaks when we used the sposies then the cloth!!

Thanks ladies! I ended up buying a dozen infant prefolds, and 2 newborn Thirsties covers from another company, as well as a snappi and my PUL bags. I would have paid $15 in shipping alone to order from the 2 seperate websites (ME and the other)! The pf's are much smaller, and it makes me more comfortable. I have 1 pack of nb posies from a friend, and I will use those till they're gone. After all this money up front on CD's, I surely wont be tempted to turn back now...hopefully!!
