Hello Fellow Cloth Diaperers,

I need your advice! You all give such great advice on cloth diapering, that I would like to hear your take on baby bottles. Here's the deal:  I could have a baby before the semester is over, so I'd like to be prepared with a nice bottle which would work well with breast-feeding babies. I only attend classes once a week for three hours. My best-case scenario would be to nurse before I take off to class, and nurse as soon as I return home. I'm not sure if that would work out exactly as planned, so I'd like to  be prepared with pumped milk and a bottle which would intuitive for my new baby to drink from. I'm open to using glass bottles, stainless steel bottles, or any other BPA-free bottles on the market.  I'm sure that each baby is different, and I realize that I may need to purchase a few different bottles to experiment with. With my last child, I think that my son drank from a bottle about 20 times, and fed from the breast his first year. I used Avent Disposable Nurser (300), lined with Gerber Seal'N Go Breast Milk storage bags. The Avent Disposable Nurser has been discontinued (not the Tempo), so I'm not sure where to begin. What would you all recommend?

P.S., I'm a SAHM, and I plan to nurse full-time, and nurse just for occasional outings.

I used the Playtex nurser & liners with both my boys. Oddly enough, these bottles have been around so long that I was fed with the same system some 35 years ago! I like them and recommend them because:
Nipples look and feel like a real nipple. Gotta be less confusing.
Collapsing & sterile liners. Your baby can even sit completely upright due to there being no air to break their suction. Independant babies love that! Less air means less gas & discomfort. Less ear infections and spitting up since baby can sit upright so no fluid backup.
BPa free liners and nipples are natural rubber.
We stayed with the newborn flow the whole year and he never found that drinking from a bottle was any faster than drinking from mom. So he really never seemed to prefer one over the other like some babies do. Not sure if it was the bottle itself or the kid.
Only con: disposable liners. I kindof wish they made a reuseable liner so less waste. We went through 6 boxes of 50 liners that whole year. We only did 1 bottle once a day. But if you do FT bottles(like at daycare), then the numbers of liners you throw out goes way up.
Anyway, I figure 40 years of real world testing and millions of babies can't be wrong. But obviously, I'm partial. To me, the expensive "vent" systems don't make sense with all that air in the bottle for baby to suck and the ones made by a "dr" have so many small parts that can trap bacteria and can get lost easily seem impractical for real world parenting.
Ahhh, but now I soapbox.....
I guess if you liked what you used before and baby was happy, why change? I'd just use what works for you and baby.

I used the Dr Browns bottles and if I had anymore, I would use the glass ones.  They have Polycarbonate, Polypropylene & Glass.  I know there are many parts, but you can steralize them.  They come with a brush.  It just made sense to us to vent air.  My kids rarely had gas because of the venting system.  http://www.handi-craft.com     but you can check it out here if interested.  I had a colic preemie who this really helped for.  And DS never had gas and he used these until he was 1. They really do vent the air.  But that was my preference.  They have the wide neck bottles too.  Whichever ones you choose, good luck!

I am a working mother who went back to work with my 2 week old??  Not to sure what I was thinking.  She came with me for the first couple of weeks but then I started leaving her.  I have been pumping and bottle feeding.  I have been using the Born Free bottles with the wide neck to make it closer to the real thing.  I pumped my first bottle when she was 5 days old and I have had no problems with nipple confusion and switching between bottle and breast.  Good luck!

Both of my boys are EBF, but both have used the Playtex disposable nursers at one time or another.  My older DS used the newer Natural Latch latex nipple, and my little DS has used the orthodontic nipple.  These have been really successful for us and it's really the only disposable item in our house.  I have used other reusable bottles for storing b-milk, but they ALWAYS feel slick inside no matter what dish soap I use or how hot I get the water.

Good luck with the new baby and with your studies!

We use the Dr. Brown's glass bottles. No worries about BPA and they have been working well for us. Our baby is 2 months old.
