Washing --Borax? (shallenbeck)
Posted: 11:36:10 am on 12/12/2008 Modified: 1:43:44 pm on 12/18/2008

I was told Simple Green and washing soda is the best way to wash cloth diapers. I have Simple Green but I am unable to find washing soda. Can I use Dreft (or the generic version) on cloth diapers?
Any suggestions for alternatives to washing soda?

I would be very cautions with Dreft. I've never used it personally but it's on a lot of "don't use" cloth diaper lists. For example: http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm

For washing soda, where exactly have you looked? I've found mine at a several different grocery stores (in the laundry aisle, with the other 'additives' like borax and such) and even at Wal-Mart. The following link even has a phone # you can call to track down the nearest retailer that carries it. Also keep an eye out even in places that didn't have it in the past. I've found that it's something that retailers don't necessarily restock as soon as it's out so they may have just been out of stock when you checked.

I have looked at Target (where I do my shopping) and 2 Wal-Marts (becasue that's were I heard I could find it). Thank you for that link! It has a lot of good info in addition to that phone number.

Has anyone used Borax to wash diapers? I still have not found the washing soda.

We do. Washing soda is sodium carbonate and Borax is sodium bi-carbonate. Very slightly different. If you google "washing soda" and "borax" and click on the wiki-pedia links for definitions and uses, it tells you all about them and how they are different. But they do essentially the same thing. That way you get the 411 on what you are intending to use. I'd also wiki the "simple green" stuff too. To be fully informed on what you'll be using on that baby's clothing.
But we use Borax with our soapnuts for dipes and whites, as they didn't seem quite as fresh without it. I also had a hard time finding washing soda locally for some reason. Go figure.....
Cheers!

Actually, not to be picky, but borax is not sodium bi-carbonate, that's baking soda. Borax is sodium borate (not that I knew that off hand

I'd say try it, nothing to lose really. They're both fairly common laundry additives so it's not a crazy idea... I don't know that they both work the same way (I have a feeling washing soda would be more effective) but it's worth a try.

As for the Simple Green, it's controversial because it's advertised as being environmentally friendly but it contains 2-butoxyethanol which is a toxic ingredient. I keep meaning to try the same recipe with another 'all-purpose' type cleaner instead but never think of it...

Huh, very strange, this talk of Simple Green prompted me to email the lady who runs the sight where the recipe first originated and the recipe isn't there anymore... I wonder if maybe the butoxyethanol in the Simple Green isn't the reason? Anyway, I've emailed and asked her about perhaps using another cleaner instead. I'll post when I receive an answer...

Borate...hence the name Borax. Just be sure you research your laundry additives. That's all I'm sayin'
Cheers!
