question Can CD give fungus? (Threepeasinpod)
Posted: 4:30:44 pm on 12/14/2008 Modified: Never

Hi! I have triplets (2 girls and 1 boy) and we're using the bamboo one size cd.  We love  them! But since Saturday our little boy has some irritation, redness and swallen on is the tip of his little thing and a little around the sack.  We went to the doctor and it looks like a fungus.  So we are treating that with some cream.  Usually when I go to the doctor I put on disposable diapers.  So when I came back from the doctor it looked at lot better already, but then I switch him to a cd and a few ours later it was red and swollen again! even worse than before. So I decided to put him on disposable diaper for now.  So I'm wondering if the diapers have a fungus? is that possible? from accumulation of bacteria? how do I  get rid of it? we watch on sanitary cycle and one pre-wash cycle and only use a little bit of detergent.  Do I need to do something special to get rid of the fungus? Thanks!!

I'm not sure about a fungus, but I know a little about a yeast infection.  Is that what you mean?  When I suspected a yeast infection that didn't go away even with antifungal cream, I boiled the diapers and cloth wipes in a big pot on the stove.  It was a pain in the butt, but all for the sake of a darling little butt!  Ha ha.  My daughted ended up not having yeast, but my diapers have never been so clean!  By the way, I boiled them when they were clean out of the machine- it seems obvious but when I told my sister I was boiling them she got totally grossed out.  I also used vinegar in the rinse thereafter, and sprayed them with tea tree oil.  There are some previous posts on there about yeast infection.

Another thing...I just reread your post.  You don't want the rash to spread to your other babies, so try to keep the boiled diapers exclusively for the boy with a rash.  You'll need two diaper pails.  I had to do this for a bit because my baby and toddler both wear the OS diapers.  Good luck!

Christinet: thanks so much for your reply!! I don't know if fungus and yeast infection is the same.  But my doctor said that he had a "fungus" (and it is on the tip of his little pinus) but we are using the same cream as we would with a yeast, so it might be the same I don't know.  See I have  triplets, I have been using the same diapers on everybody (until my boy got the fungus) and now he is on dd.  How come the girls didn't get it? I washed all the diapers in small loads twice on sanitary cycle, but that didn't do anything I tried it again on my boy when he was almost heal and he got sick again! so I'm going to try to boil them.  So do I need to boil ALL the diapers? for how long did you boil the diapers? and did you put the vinager in the washing machine? or just rinse them with vinager? how much vinager? why did you spray them with tree oil? did you leave the oil in? or rinse it out? sorry for all the questions! but I'm new at this. I'll try finding the all post on yeast.  Thanks again!!

You may want to consider bleaching your diapers.  My daughter was having problems with recurring diaper rash.  When I called Mother-ease they said that bleaching would guarantee that I wasn't harboring an infection.  Make sure that you don't pour the bleach right on the diapers.  Dilute it or fill the washer with water and bleach before adding your diapers.

Good luck.
